Things to do in Des Moines

Pappa Johns Park I didn’t know a lot about Iowa before driving across the state on my way out to the coast. I knew that the two guys in the Discovers Channel show Pickers were both from Iowa but that was about it. When driving through Des Moines my family and I decided we wanted to get out and stretch our legs. We heard of a nice park in the city and wanted to check it out. The Pappa John Sculpture Park is a beautiful part of the city that you just have to see. It is filled with both wild and beautiful pieces of art. Many of them are what I considered to be strange and lacking direction. I think that is really the draw to these sculptures though. Many of them can be interpreted many different ways. It really depends on your personality and how your day has been going. If your day was like mine and stuck in a car with 4 other people then your interpretation of some of the sculptures are probably going to be rather sarcastic. Getting out of the car and exploring this park was lots of fine and the fresh air was very welcome. The 4.4 acre park has 27 pieces or art that come from 21 different artists. One of my favorite pieces is the torso made from letters. It’s completely open and you can walk and stand inside the sculpture. It’s a really cool experience and it’s fun to try and find words in the madness. I would recommend the Pappa Johns Sculpture Park to anyone who is traveling near Des Moines.

Where to eat in Des Moines

Jethro's BBQ Going into Iowa I didn’t quite know what to expect for food. When travel most of the time I know what I should look out for. Like in Chicago they have good Hot Dogs. Tennessee and the other southern states have really good BBQ. The same goes for Texas, in New Mexico and Arizona Mexican food is at its best. Iowa however I was left hanging. I wasn’t too surprised when a local pointed me to Jethro’s BBQ for good eats. Every town has a good BBQ place it just depends on how good it really is. In my book Jethro’s has some extremely good eats. Its BBQ through and trough, severed with corn bread, baked beans, cole slaw, macaroni salad, and a large array of BBQ sauces that make any place special and tasty. What really made Jethros a hit for me was the Emmenecker Challenge it’s a massive burger that has everything and then some on a burger. Spicy pickle, bun, pork tenderloin, chicken tenders, fried cheese cubs, brisken, bacon, beef, and more. Its every mans dream of what a perfect meal should be. The real kicker in the challenge is you have to eat the whole sandwich and a whole pound of waffle fries in just 15 minutes. This challenge is so touch that even the Food network hit show Man Vs. Food had to come and take a shot at this beast of a meal. I didn’t try the challenge but I did get the chance to see someone else try and fail.
