O'Donnell House Historic Tour
Atop a mountain, looking out
over the Ojo Del Deseierto desert and Palm Springs, California, the
O'Donnell House sits majestically like an oasis in a wild barren
land. It was designed by Charles Tanner and constructed in 1925 for
oil baron Thomas O'Donnell by Nellie Coffman, the founder of Palm
Springs and owner of the magnificent Desert Inn of Palm Springs. As
you climb the rock faced road to enter the wrought iron gates, you
will notice the words, "Ojo Del Desierto" etched against the bright
blue sky, and the beautiful house that sits astride a cleft in the
mountain side and can turn to see one of the best panoramic views of
the area. Sitting there like flower blooming in the desert
barrenness, the huge terrace sprawls across an expanse of
surrealism. The estate has been refurbished by the Willows Historic
Palm Springs Inn with the O'Donnell house and grounds containing
rare and original tile floors, bathrooms, antique furniture, redwood
ceilings, gorgeous rock work, unusual gardens and incredible views
on the desert surrounding you like a warm cozy blanket. The estate
is open for conference and other special venues, like weddings,
family gatherings and reunions or corporate meetings; and unrivaled
in this secluded historic setting that offers the visitor or guest a
wonderful opportunity to enjoy privacy and serenity. The amenities
are nothing less than first class, with a full gourmet breakfast
served on china, with silver place settings, all in a formal dining
room or the verandah; or if you prefer, a private garden patio. The
breakfast offers fresh squeezed orange juice, peppered bacon, apple
sausage, fresh baked breads and muffins, homemade granola and
fantastic main courses like baked eggs with black truffle sauce and
parmesan served with toast points, puffed German pancakes with
blackberry and raspberry coulis and banana stuffed French toast. In
the afternoons, around tea time, refreshments can be served by the
pool or at your private garden patio. In the nighttime, there is a
reception with excellent boutique wines that have been imported from
around the globe, with a wonderful variety of hors d'oevres that
have homemade empanadas, spinach and mushroom quiches, artichoke
dip, filo triangles, shrimp and honey mustard dip, pesto and smoked
pepper torte, crudite and cheese. Full concierge service is
available with spa services, massage, facials, pedicures, manicures,
aromatherapy, all brought to your private room or at the spa; room
or poolside lunches, dinner service from Le Vallauris, which is
fabulous Four Star French restaurant; mountain or street bikes that
