Dacotah
Prairie Museum
In 1941 when the Northern
South Dakota History Museum was closed because of the school
it was housed at needing the space to train pilots most of
the collection was put away in storage or returned to the
donors. Finally in 1970 after seeking out a permanent
location for the museum a building was offered to the county
to use for the museum. The museum then opened their doors
filling only partial of the first floor and calling them
selves the Dacotah Prairie Museum. By 1980 all of the
residing tenants in the building left, leaving the whole
building to the Museum in which soon occupied the building
entirely. Today the museum still holds a huge collection of
South Dakotas past including the galleries that include art
from local and regional artists as well as quilts, mounted
animals, and many interesting valuables and everyday things
used in the past. Its a great museum to enjoy the history of
South Dakota.
