Brandenburg Gate  
Is another popular tourist attraction that should not be missed when you are visiting the city of Berlin.  The Brandenburg Gate was commissioned by Fredrich Wilhelm II during the 1700's to represent safety and peace, the Brandenburg Gate is a major iconic symbol in the city of Berlin.  Brandenburg Gate was originally built as a customs post, this famous gate was an integral part of the Berlin Wall and remained locked for the duration of the Communist rule.  Once the wall that was used as a boundary between East and West Berlin was knocked down, the Brandenburg Gate became an important symbol of German reunification and is only one out of 18 gates that remain today.  This famous gate was designed in 1791, by Carl Gotthard Langhans.  The Brandenburg Gate features beautiful architecture with many intricate details including a detailed structure of the beautiful goddess Victory who resides at the top of the structure.  During the time when Napoleon occupied Berlin in 1806, he stole the goddess statue and took it back to Paris.  Goddess Victory was returned back to her original home atop the Brandenburg Gate in 1814.  When the Berlin Wall was destroyed in 1989, Berlin held many of their celebrations around the gate.   Over the years the Brandenburg Gate has been the backdrop for several protests & rallies by various political groups.  This historic landmark has undergone a few years of restoration, now the Brandenburg Gate stands majestically in the center of Berlin.  The Gate joins the two sides of the city along with a busy road running underneath.  Featured in the North wing of the gate is the Room of Silence where you can sit in the peace and quiet admiring this historic landmark.  The Brandenburg Gate is open daily so don't miss visiting one of the most popular & photographed landmarks in Berlin.

• Topography of Terror    
  Is an open air museum, built on and near the former buildings used by the Third Reich Government during their time in power. Several of these buildings including the Gestapo & SS Headquarters were completely destroyed during the war and the allied invasions.  The Topography of Terror chronicles the horrors and atrocities of the Nazis from 1933 to their fall in 1945.  This open air museum is situated near the boundary between West Berlin & the former communist East Berlin and sits adjacent to a portion of the Berlin Wall which was erected during the Cold War.  During the late 1980's these ruins were excavated and revealed cellars that were used by the Nazis to torture, imprison and kill political prisoners.  In 1987, this site was made into a memorial & museum dedicated to revealing the horrors of the German Third Reich.  The Topography of Terror memorial  also  displays a section that deals with the Nuremberg Trials.  It was during these trials that the Nazi leaders were tried for war crimes and were held accountable for their actions. Recordings were made of these trials so visitors can listen to both the Nazis and their victims' to hear what actually took place.  Be aware when you visit this memorial, it contains a lot of graphic details in written form, recordings & pictures depicting how terrible conditions were for those not favored by the Nazi.  A visit to the Topography of Terror provides visitors a sombering glimpse into life during these terrible times.

• Gedachtniskirche (Memorial Church) 
  Is a site worth seeing on your visit to Berlin.   The Memorial Church is one of the most striking buildings on Kurfurstendamm, Berlin's most exclusive shopping street.  Initially, the Memorial Church was to be demolished to make room for the new one.  However, the public was not in favor of the demolition and  due to public pressure the Church stands where it has always stood with it's bombed out tower as a constant reminder of the Second World War.  Today this historical  Church is a memorial hall where visitors can still see the ground floor interior of the Church, see the before and after shots and learn all about the history of the Church along with the surrounding area.  Visitors can also take a guided tour of the Memorial Church offered at various times throughout the day except on Sundays.  Although the old Church was never demolished, a newer Church was built right next to the Memorial Church, which was designed & built in the 1960's.   The new Church consists of four buildings all placed around the Memorial Church.  The largest building is octagonal in shape and is inlaid with thousands of stained glass sections and the view from the inside of the church is spectacular !!!!  During advent, a  large Christmas Market takes place on the square around the church, which usually runs a few days after Christmas.   The Memorial Church is full of rich history and displays beautiful architecture so don't miss the opportunity to stop by for a visit.
