Things to do in Aurora

  • Denver Art Museum Denver Art Museum Colorado
Less than 5 miles from the city of Aurora, Colorado sits the majestic and magnificent Denver Art Museum that is known for its marvelous collection of Native American art and a collection of colossal works that number over 68,000 pieces from around the world. The museum started in 1893 as the Denver Artists club and was renamed the Denver Art Association in 1916. Two years later, it moved into the city and county building and was renamed for the last time, the Denver Art Museum or DAM. In 1954, it was moved to the first purpose building now called the Morgan Wing and the present structure was designed by Gio Ponti and local architect James Sudler and finished in 1971. It is 24 sided, with 7 stories and the exterior is grey tiled specially designed for the building by Dow Corning. It is located next to the Denver Public Library, which was designed by Burnham Hoyt and Michael Graves. In 2006, a 5700 square foot addition or the Duncan Pavilion was added to the north building on top so that it could accommodate the bridge traffic coming from the new Frederic C. Hamilton building that is pictured to the right and the present 1971 building.  There are nine various collections in the museum; textile art, architecture, painting and sculpture (American and European), photography, Asian art, New-World (pre-Columbian and Spanish colonial, design and graphics, Western art, modern and contemporary and native arts (African, Oceanic and American Indian). The Native American is known world wide with over 16,000 pieces that are from over 100 tribes in North America. Arnold Ronnebeck, the director from 1926 to 1930, decided to use aesthetic quality as a means of acquiring a collection, and was the first museum in the nation to start collecting Native American artworks. It raised the level of importance of anthropological artifacts by showing them as art. This early diversity has created a marvelous collection that includes Winnebago twined weaving, California basketry, Northwest coast woodcarving, Navajo weaving, Naskapi painted leather garments, Pueblo pottery and Plains Indian beadwork. The African collection holds some 1000 pieces that showcase the diverse artistic rituals of the continent, that include rare works of drawings, sculpture, painting, textiles, printmaking, textiles and jewelry. The main collection is of West Africa work, but the Yoruba works are highlighted from all the areas to include terracotta, wood, fibers, metals and mixed media compositions. The European and American painting and sculpture works contain over 3000 pieces that includes works by Georgia O'Keefe, Botticelli, Picasso, Defendente, Matisse, Ferrari, Monet, Pissaro and Matisse.

  • Aurora History Museum
This museum is a community based venue that showcases evolving history and decorative arts displays. Family events, tours, educational programs and workshops are available to the residents of Aurora all year long, and there is a history of the city that is in a permanent gallery, as well as two smaller ones that rotate exhibits. The museum was opened in 1979, with two little galleries and an office located in a historical building and moved to its present locale in 1990. The move increased the amount of space that was available for its collections and exhibits with a classroom so that workshops, lectures and classed could be given. Its reference library has doubled since opening, with the main focus being on the collection and exhibition of documents and relics that are related to the city and state's history; with access to the library and archives available to the public. It is free to the public and its continued evaluation process assists the decision of what kinds of quality events, programs and exhibits to give. It works toward giving the community a place to be considered as the main cultural resource, by having programs and exhibits that will promote a growing awareness of the city's history and cultural expansions.

  • Morrison Nature Center
The nature center sits on 200 acres of natural landscapes and has a learning center, all on the Sand Creek Greenway and the Star K Ranch. The continuously changing displays are seasonal, that showcase various plants and animals and their songbird feeding stations are a wonder of beautiful colors and flight. There are many things for the children to do that include puppets, books and live animal displays where the kids can touch and feel many different animals. A number of trails meander through the property showing different varieties of flora and fauna, with the Wetland Loop being the smallest and just under three quarter of a mile, but full of snags, stumps and elegant cottonwoods that have become home to meadowlarks, mule deer and turtles. Guides will be happy to give a talk, or guided walk that will help you learn more about the center and the many great works that it achieves. The Creekside Trail is a mile and a half, and the Sand Creek Greenway Trail is almost 13 miles with areas for horseback riding, biking, jogging or just regular hiking along the marvelous landscape. There are trailside benches to rest or just sit waiting for any of the wild creatures to pass by, a water station, picnic tables for a short snack or lunch and the horse corral to keep your horse while you get ready to ride the trails. • Denver ZooDenver Zoo Colorado
The Denver Zoo is a must visit when you go to Aurora, Colorado since it is a fabulous attraction located on 80 acres and began in 1896. It was the most popular place to visit in 2005 in the Denver metro area and still brings in huge crowds. The zoo started because of a small black bear cub named Billy Bryan, short for the famous American politician William Jennings Bryan, was given to the mayor, Thomas S. McMurry. The animal turned out to be difficult to take care of so the mayor gave it to the keeper of the city park, Alexander J. Graham, who in turn started the zoo. Other animals began to arrive, the native waterfowl that resided at the Duck Lake, antelope and prairie dogs; and a flock of Chinese pheasants that eventually went on to populate the eastern plains of the state. In 1905, red squirrels were brought in, which continued to grow and overcome the birds at Duck Lake. The squirrels were going to be shot, but too many of the city's residents objected and all that could be captured were moved to the Denver Mountain Parks. It was a strange crowd of animals until 1906, when Mayor Robert W. Speer said that the bars should be eliminated in favor of trees, concrete walls, and waterfalls. He hired the city's landscape architect to design the plans for this change and made Victor H. Borcherdt the director. Victor designed the bear mountain display that opened in 1918, which is 43 feet tall and 185 feet long. It took $50,000 to build it and it was dyed red with the textured concrete forms being cast from the Dinosaur Mountain in Morrison, Colorado. Moats replaced the bars, with native plants and an artificial stream installed to create a more natural look. The southern end was made to look like the Mesa Verde National Park, that did hold the monkeys, but they kept escaping so the sea lions were moved there instead. Presently coati are there with grizzly bears and Asiatic black bears in the adjoining sections. The bear mountain exhibit was so impressive that it lifted the status of the zoo and the St. Louis zoo asked Borcherdt to come there to design exhibits for them. Many of the zoos in the country used the New Deal money to upgrade their exhibits, but the only change to the Denver zoo was the monkey island display was constructed in 1937 with funds from the WPA. One mayor, Benjamin F. Stapleton did little to help the zoo, and by the time that Quigg Newton became mayor, the zoo has been poorly maintained and was in bad disrepair. Quigg hired DeBoer, one of the original architects involved in the zoo, to help with a major renovation. Beginning in 1950 and starting with monkey island the zoo has continued to add and repair its exhibits. Twin polar bears, Snow and Klondike were born to Ulu, who in turn rejected the cubs which were then raised by the staff, becoming a very popular attraction to visitors. They are now in Seaworld Orlando and having the time of their lives. In 2007, a jaguar attacked a zookeeper named Ashlee Pfaff in its enclosure and was subsequently killed by the emergency response team. She later died at the hospital from her injuries; although keepers and cats were not supposed to be in contact. There are specimens from around the world, including hoofed mammals, reptiles, fish, carnivorous mammals, primates, birds and pachyderms.

  • Sand Creek Regional Greenway TrailSand Creek Regional Greenway Trail Aurora, Colorado
This trail is a gem in the circle of trails that encompass the Denver metro area and has become a national example of the ways that a city can accomplish a marvelous venue for its citizens. More and more cities are finding ways to keep their residents at home and nearby, so that they don't have to travel the nation finding ways to energize and exercise their well being. It must be noted that there are many sand creeks in the state and this one is not the sand creek site of the horrible massacre against the Arapahos and Cheyenne Indians that happened in 1864. The trail is 5.9 miles of paved surface and 3.9 miles of crushed gravel, which was finished in 2007 and is the last leg of the greenway trail. It starts at the South Platte River and goes to the old Stapleton runway tunnels, that have had their tops stripped off to allow bike riders a freer environment to ride in. It is all part of a 50 mile loop that runs completely along bike paths and is a wonderful ride for cyclists of all ages. Along the trail you will come across benches in shaded areas to give riders a chance to relax, recuperate and have a lite snack or drink. There are restrooms at various intervals, as well as picnic shelters and many beautiful new trees all along the route. It is a great ride, with scenery that will make you realize the quiet beauty that has been sitting idle for so many years; useless and out of the way with hardly a use for anyone. This kind of upgrade in bike trails have been happening all over the country as people strive to get more exercise that will help their health as well as bringing the family closer as they ride along. If you are a real enthusiast or just glutton for punishment you can always go back the way you came and make it a real trip at just over a hundred miles. Not really something that can be done in a day, but if you are hardy and determined a wonderful way to enjoy the spring or fall weather on a weekend.

  • Plains Conservation Center
There are two sites, one in Aurora and the other in Strasburg, Colorado, that when combined total almost 8900 acres, with the Aurora site encompassing some 1100 acres; that have come about to bring the natural beauty of the prairies into the world of people by saving a part of the eastern Colorado High Plains and explaining to the public, the natural and cultural heritage that is involved with conservation and environmental issues. The Aurora site was once railroad land and bought by the city of Denver in 1933, and then became the property of the federal government and managed by the Bureau of Land Management. It was given to the West Arapahoe soil conservation district in 1950, and called the Plains Conservation Center. During the latter part of the 1980s, the land had become something of an island in the growing developments and constant pressure from developers was becoming too strenuous to ignore. The district then decided to start a process whereby the land could be secured for all generations to come and enjoy its wild natural beauty. In 1997, the 1100 acres was sold to the city of Aurora and would become a passive-use open space area that the center would manage. The land is full of streams, crags, and wide open plains that have been that way for thousands of years and will remain a place for all generations to come and explore and visualize what it held for the many settlers that passed this way during the 19th century. The Front Range building in Aurora is a nature center with exhibits, live animals and a resource library with over 800 books and is used as a classroom for students during the week and open for the public on the weekends. Also located here is the Wells Crossing, a historic farm that contains two homesteads that were copied, a blacksmith shop, barn and schoolhouse. The buildings are furnished with antiquities from the period and other replications of the pioneering lifestyle. A picnic pavilion, chicken coop, solar restrooms and heirloom garden is found here as well. A mock Cheyenne camp with four Cheyenne type tipis provided with copied artifacts will give visitors some idea of what life was like for the Native Americans in the early 1830s, before the onslaught of white men started. The offices are in the Arapahoe building that was brought here in 1982.

  • Denver BroncosDenver Broncos, Mike Leach and son Ryan, Colorado
The Denver Broncos is in the American Football Conference Division of the National Football League and were one of the charter members in 1960, of the American Football League before joining the AFL-NFL merger. They have won the super bowl twice, in 1997 and again in 1998, with 10 division championships, and 20 NFL playoffs. They were the conference champs 6 times. The team was started in 1959 and beat the Boston Patriots in their first game in 1960, 13-10. The team had a rather shaky start during the 1960s, but a group of local businessmen bought the team in 1965 to keep the franchise going in Denver. It wasn't until 1976, with Coach Red Miller and quarterback Craig Morton that the Bronks made their first super bowl but were defeated by the tough Dallas Cowboys, 27-10. In 1981, Canadian Edgar Kaiser, Jr. bought the club and got John Elway in 1983, which helped the Broncos go to the super bowl five times, winning two of them. In 1995, Mike Shanahan took over the reins in Denver and rookie running back Terrell Davis came aboard which helped the team with its two super bowl wins. Elway only passed 22 times with 12 of those being completed since he had a migraine, but he did run in a touchdown. Davis rushed for a total of 157 yards, with a new super bowl record of three touchdowns and earning him the MVP for that bowl. They beat the mighty Green Bay Packers 31-24. The next year, Elway was up to par and won the MVP for the beating of the Atlanta Falcons, 34-19. It was the end for Elway and it seemed so for the Broncos, as the city waits in suspense for another leader to come to Denver to spur the team to another super bowl victory. Perhaps this is the year they have all been waiting for. With new qb Kyle Orton and running back Knowshon Moreno and are now having the best season since that fantastic run in 1998. Good luck Bronks, go all the way!

  • Cave of the WindsCave of the Winds Aurora, Colorado
The cave of the winds is near Pikes Peak in Colorado and the many caverns here have given people much excitement and enjoyment over the years. The Silent Splendor room is the most well known, and was found in 1984. There are many rare crystalline speleothems in the room, but it has been blocked off so as to not affect its environments with visitors and other contaminants that might enter. Another well known part is the one known as the bottomless pit, which has been the place of many jokes played on people by the guides. Another is the rat; and the caverns were the setting for the 2006 episode "ManBearPig" in the series South Park. The caves have been likened to a geoadventure, the combining of geology and adventure since it is such a magnificent cave. It has become one of the numerous attractions that must be seen when visiting Colorado for over 100 years. The Jicarilla Apaches wandered through the area over a millennia ago and found the cave leaving legends of the Great Spirit of the wind who lived there. In the late 1800s, the cave was found by two young brothers named John and George Pickett who just happened by the cave one day. The boys were part of the church group that had gone for an outing in the mountains and found the cave which is now considered one of the finest examples of a cave in the nation. Over the years, many people have come to see the magnificent caverns as it exists today. It is definitely one of the best natural attractions in the state, and also an awesome adventure to partake of. Bring the camera so that you will have some excellent memories to share with your family and friends.

  • Garden of the Gods
The Garden of the Gods is another venue that must be seen in the thrilling state of Colorado, which is a public park and is always free, thanks to Charles Elliot Perkins, whose children donated the land with that specification. The spikes and rock formations that are found here are nothing short of spectacular and will awe you. There are many trails for hiking, mountain biking, walking or horseback riding, and one of the most favorite has been named after its benefactor, the Perkins, was paved so that no amount of erosion could affect the path. In the hotter days of the summer, visitors are always told to be on the lookout for rattlesnakes in the area. It has become a favorite of rock climbers because of the formations which are starkly beautiful and difficult to climb. A permit is required to climb, plus the rules must be read and adhered to since one of them is that you must have another person with you since there have been some injuries and fatalities over the years. The magnificent views throughout the park have brought in great amounts of bike riders who enjoy the terrain and the sights. The paved paths, clean fresh air and incredible views have continued to bring them here every year. The superb geological formations are old sedimentary rocks of white, red, blue and purple sandstone, limestone and conglomerates that were left here horizontally but because of the pressures of the mountains plates, they are tilted vertically. You can see the remnants of thousands of years in the beds that are ancient seas, sandy beaches, alluvial fans and immense sand dunes that are seen in the rock. Numerous fossils can be also observed in the rock formations like the marine forms, dinosaur fossils and plant fossils.
