Things to do in Sanford

  • First Chance Whale Watch First Chance Whale Watch Maine
Billed as the memory of a lifetime, the First Chance Whale Watch in Kennebunkport, Maine, just minutes from Sanford, Maine, is definitely a wonderful opportunity to sail out into the Atlantic Ocean and watch the whales that frolic and swim through the waters. This tour company offers you 4.5 hours of fantastic sights and sounds off the coast of Maine, where you will not only see the whales swimming and diving in the cold waters, but also the dolphins and other marine life that calls this part of the coast home. Another cruise option is the 1.5 hours tour that takes you onto the Kennebunk River and along the Kennebunkport coast. Here is your chance to see seals close up and personal, check out the former President Bush's seaside resort home and learn how the famous Maine lobsters are harvested and grown. Either cruise is sure to make your day and the memories are forever. The newest addition to the fleet is an 87 foot boat that is equipped with the best safety and navigational gear on the seas. Nick's Chance tour will take you out of Kennebunkport and into the cold waters off the coast of Maine, where you will see finbacks, humpbacks, minke's, rare blue whales and endangered right whales. There is plenty of space on the rails of both port and starboard sides, and the setup is perfect for getting those magnificent photos that you can show your family and friends, as well as putting them into your photo album or burning them on a DVD. The craft has its own galley, stocked with snacks, sodas, water and light fare for breakfast or lunch. You can bring your own goodies, but please no glass containers or coolers. The captain aboard is Gary and his furry four legged assistant, Morgan; who have been on enough cruises to make your trip extra special and more memorable. They know the waters around there and will make sure that you will see plenty of whales; since they know where the mammoths of the deep like to swim and play. Captain Gary and Morgan know more than just those tidbits, they know about the legends and stories that have been passed down for generations and will keep you entertained for the whole cruise. The season runs from May 23 through October 12, and the price for this tour is only $48 for adults and $28 for children, age 3 to 12. This is a family type cruise, if you have one, or it can be an outing for friends, relatives or groups from the office. You will love the beauty and serenity that overtakes you as you watch some of the biggest creatures of the sea doing all kinds of things for your pleasure; they seem to know that you are here to watch them and they do a great job of pleasing you. The shorter lobster cruise is on a 65 foot boat that is one of the biggest on the New England coast, and will give you all the first hand knowledge of the lobster business. Another extra added attraction is the opportunity, or chance as this company is known by, is to visit George Bush's estate, number 41; or you might see him and the secret service out fishing for the day on his boat. He always returns your wave, if you should see him.

It is located in Kennebunk, Maine, and has about 150 employees now that produce 90 oral and body care products that are sold at over 40,000 stores in the nation. Starting in 1981, the company has listed the ingredients, the purpose of that ingredient, and the source of the ingredient so that you know and understand the product you are buying. The Chappells' newest products are all-natural wool clothing that highlights the satisfaction of their customers, and the ecological effects on the environment. The name of the new company is Ramblers Way Farm.

  • The Brick Store Museum
The Brick Store Museum is located in Kennebunk, Maine, near Sanford, Maine, and strives to continue and save the great history and heritage of the Kennebunks for all those that visit here. The story of this marvelous museum starts over two centuries ago when William Lord was born at Kennebunk Landing in 1799, the third son of Hephzibah Conant and Tobias Lord. Becoming a merchant and ship owner, William soon became one of the town's most prominent leaders and citizens. Sarah Cleaves, from Biddeford, Maine, became his wife in 1820, and moved into the Jonas Clark house on Summer Street. Sitting high upon a hill, the house has since become known as the William Lord mansion, where the couple raised their ten children. William started building a dry goods store in 1825, on Main Street, the building that now houses the Brick Store Museum. It was called Lord's Store, and quite unique for its period since it was made of locally produced brick; materials that were more expensive than the wonderful woods of Maine. The exterior is still the same after almost two centuries, while the inside has underwent many changes. The store's upstairs rooms contain a pulley system that was used to bring up the heavier items, and this can be seen through the skylight. When William passed on, in 1873, he was one of the richest men in the city and his grave is found just across the street from the museum in Hope Cemetery. Edith Cleaves Barry, William's great granddaughter, came to inherit the store, and she decided to make the second floor a museum in 1936. Eventually gaining control of three more buildings alongside the museum, she connected them all together, and these historic structures were built in 1810 to 1860. The basis of the collection here was taken from the Lords' relics as well as related family members; while presently the museum is home to many regional and historical artifacts and archives center. Current exhibitions include the "mailed from Maine: vintage postcards of the Kennebunks"; a marvelous display of postcards from the early 20th century, and cameras that were used to produce the postcard pictures. Also on view is the "Quilts from the Collections of the Brick Store Museum", that include inspirational quilts from the Civil War up to the 20th century. The next venue is "History Showcase; Happy Birthday, "41", meaning the 85th birthday of President George Bush Sr. that spends his summers at the Kennebunkport coastline and what he has done for the community.

  • McDougal's OrchardsMcDougal's Orchards Springvale, Maine
The orchards are located on part of a 450 acre tract that was bought at a tax auction in 1779, by Joshua Hanson, for 52 pounds and ten shillings. Since that initial period, the farm has continued on in various means, with Hanson's descendants still owning and farming the land. By 1930, only 4 or 5 acres were planted with apple trees, like August sweets, Peewaukees, Pippins and Russets. From 1930 until 1933, Alva McDougal, who married Mary Hanson, started planting 1600 McIntosh apple trees in 17 acres that has become the main orchard. Many of these trees are still producing today. Robert H., was one of Alva's sons, and he owns the land today, and is also responsible for the introduction of dwarf apple trees, and more modernized methods of farming and cultivating the orchards. In 1974, after a hailstorm ruined many of the trees, he started a pick-your-own apples, since he couldn't make enough from any wholesale business. The Hanson family has three generations of Hansons working the farm, and since they are located near the ocean beaches and the beautiful lakes in York County, it has become a popular tourist destination. While they have continued to hold the pick-your-own business, the farm also ships apples being sold on the internet, as well as a stand in East Lebanon. The list is very extensive and quite amazing, included in the list is; jerserymac, paulared, gingergold, McIntosh, honeycrisp, macoun, golden delicious, jonagold, blondee, gala, gray pearmain, crispin, spencer, fortune, red delicious, brock, fugi, blue pearmain, baldwin, lady apple, tolman sweet and braeburn.

  •  Sanford Sprinvale Historical Society

This committee's dedication has brought about a big collection of superb artifacts, manuscripts and printed items that are part of the town's great history. The Sanford-Springvale Historical Society was started as a non-profit in 2005 so that a historical museum could be created for the towns of Sanford and Springvale, Maine. Jumping right into it, the society started raising monies for the express purpose of acquiring the old town hall in Springvale from Sanford, and then refurbishing it to make it a museum. In a little over a year, the funds were obtained, and the collections that had been at the Sanford Historical Committee were moved into the newly renovated museum in 2006. The old town hall had been built in 1873, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and in 2007, was awarded one of Maine's Preservation's awards for the exceptional quality of restorative work that the society did on the town hall. • Seashore Trolley Museum Seashore Trolley Museum Kennebunkport, Maine
The Seashore Trolley Museum is the biggest mass transit museum in the country, and here you can go back to the days when trolleys were the best means of traveling in the towns and cities across America. You can spend a few hours or the whole day riding around the beautiful Maine countryside, in an open trolley that goes slow enough for you to take awesome pictures. In the Town House Restoration Shop, you can watch volunteers bring the trolleys back to their pristine condition, visiting the museum grounds, and going into the exhibit barns containing the transit history of the world. The museum was started in 1939, with only one trolley car, No. 31 from the Biddeford and Saco Railroad Company, where thousands of people have ridden the trolleys and helped the museum grow into the magnificent venue it is today. And it has become the premier electric railway museum in the world today, with over 250 marvelous collectible transit vehicles, the majority trolleys, that have been brought here from across the nation. The museum is a non-profit, educational facility that is staffed with volunteers dedicated to the operation, preservation and restoration of the finest traveling machines in the country. The trolley service that started in the region, was called the Mousam River Railroad, giving service to the community in 1893. The trip was only two miles, between Sanford and Springvale, Maine, and just a wee bit west of Arundel, Kennebunk and Kennebunkport. The line was started to bring coal to the mills for power, and bring in the raw materials that came into Springvale via the Boston and Maine Railroad. The trolley also brought the finished products back to Springvale to ship across the country by the railroad. The mill owners that started the line, extended the trip to 20 miles in 1899, going east from Sanford to the ocean port of Cape Porpoise that was by Kennebunkport. Finding out that it was cheaper to bring in the coal by ship or barge, than by railroad, the line was named the Sanford & Cape Porpoise Railway and were able to handle passenger service along with the freight. In 1904, the two lines were combined to create the Atlantic Shore Line Railway, and after mergers and extensions, it grew into one of the biggest interurban trolley system in the state. Providing service to the entire southern Maine coastline, it connected Kittery, York, Ogunquit, Wells, Kennebunk and Kennebunkport. After leaving Kennebunkport, the line went along Log Cabin Road, where the museum is located on, and passing through the property, went on to Biddeford, that lies north of the museum. Once the connection was made from Biddeford and the trolleys, travelers could go all the way to Old Orchard Beach, one of the best beaches in Maine. The museum has a national streetcar collection from Boston, New England and national cities; international streetcar collection from Canada, New Zealand, Japan, United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, Scotland and Australia. They also have many collections of books, movies, photographs and other streetcar relics.

  • Friends of Alfred Shaker Museum
The Alfred Shaker Museum is located in a former carriage house that belonged to Alfred Shaker, and was built in 1875. Set in Alfred, Maine, the community of Shakers were active here from 1793 until 1931, when the Christian Brothers of Instruction bought the property from the Shakers, and still live there. The museum is one of eight buildings that remain on Shaker Hill, along with a marvelous Shaker cemetery. The Friends of the Alfred Shaker Museum, which is a grass roots organization, is constantly striving to raise money and give volunteer labor fro the completion of the interior renovation, that will eventually hold Shaker items and a function room to be used for educational meetings and a community center. Another venue of the group is the Shaker Workshops that still make Shaker furniture and accessories for the home. The workshops began in 1970, so that the original Shaker furniture and oval boxes could be made again, as faithfully and economically as possible, without losing any properties in the process. Shaker furniture has always been a prominent creative force in the manufacture of decorative arts and its heritage, since it is the only true original American type of furniture. The crisp clear lines and sole lightness, without sacrificing any strengths, can be used in the modern home or a more traditional setting. When possible, the same grade and type of wood is used as the original, buying from mills, with five generations of experience in choosing and seasoning wood. In 1972, the furniture has been available as do-it-yourself kits, so that you can decide if you want to finish the product or have the workshop do it. In every Shaker community, the seats are finished with fabric tape instead of rush, cane or splint wood, since it is more functional and won't dry out or rot, it doesn't break, pinch or snag clothes and it is definitely stronger and longer lasting.

  • Ogunquit Heritage MuseumOgunquit Heritage Museum Ogunquit, Maine
The Ogunquit Heritage Museum is located at the Captain James Winn House in Dorothea Jacobs Grant Common is Ogunquit, Maine. Before going into the history of the museum, a digression of the history of the name of Ogunquit is perhaps apropos. The story has been passed down through the generations of those living in Maine, or even coming from Maine, that two Micmac Indians were hunting, when they came upon one of the mightiest animals in the state, a large moose. Taking careful aim at the magnificent creature, one of the Micmacs pulled his trigger and all the response he got was the click of the hammer hitting the pan without anything happening. His quick response that has become legend was, "o gun quit", and that's how the area got its name. There is another area in Maine that has a somewhat similar story and the name of that area is mooselookmeguntick. Now back to the Ogunquit Heritage Museum, which is a typical Maine cape, built in 1780, and the first owner or builder was never discovered, just that in 1825, Captain James Winn owned the home. Historians believe the house was restored about that time, with new paint, plaster, and other newer fashionable additions that were popular around the era. The interior has been miraculously spared the ravages of time and bad use by owners and their families, but this magnificent home has retained the feather board paneling, Indian shutters, wide floor boards, original glass!, central chimney and a fabulous federal stair case and mantel. Sitting empty and unoccupied for 10 years, the basement was wet and moldy, and it had a number of guests in the guise of raccoons. The entire place was in desperate need of repair, and in 1998, a new committee was formed with a new vision of the museum and experts in the fields of restoration and refurbishing were contacted. In 2001, the house was moved to make room for the Gorges Grant Hotel, after having been moved there in 1986 by the Rotary Club; and it traveled down Rt 1. Now if you have been to the area, or been on Route 1 in Maine, then you know that there were a lot of people mad that day, holding up traffic on the busiest coast road in the nation; while a historical house was rolling down the road. It must have been quite a sight!

  • Sanford Mainers
The Sanford Mainers didn't do as well this year as they did last, winning the NECBL championship, as they did in 2004. The baseball team lost out to the Newport, R.I. Gulls 3-1 and dashed their hopes of repeating last year. These college ball players come from all across the country to keep their dreams of playing pro ball going, and heading to any city in the nation that will let them play, always hoping for that scout coming up for just the right player to fill their team's roster. The New England Collegiate Baseball League is a summer collegiate baseball league that started in 1993, and began play in 1994. There are 12 teams in the league now, playing in each New England state, and recruiting their players from the colleges across America and some foreign countries. It plays a 48 game schedule, with the playoffs being held in August, with the best players being scouted and often selected to play for the majors. To join a team, you must be enrolled in a NCAA sanctioned college or university, have a good academic standing, have finished one year of athletic eligibility and have a year left. The league suggests that you talk to your coach and have him recommend you to one of the managers or general managers of the teams. At the beginning, there were many skeptics, but with the help of various groups and towns, and area professional scouts, the dream was realized when superstar George Foster signed on as the league's first commissioner and ESPN Senior VP Loren Matthews became the first NECBL president. The league was a great success, with Willamantic, CT. winning the 1994 championships, and keeping the ball rolling. In 1995, Massachusetts team, the Central Mass Collegians won the championships, and the league was growing more. Fairfield, CT shortstop Joe Nathan, became the first to go to the majors, and he is still playing for the Minnesota Twins. Rhode Island came onboard in 1996, but Central Mass did it again and won the championships. In 1998, New Hampshire joined the league, but the Middletown, CT team that won in 1997 did it again in 98. The same held true in 1999, but in 2000, two more teams were added, and the Keene, NH Swamp Bats took the championships. The next year, 2001, the same two teams were in the playoffs, but this time, the Gulls from Newport beat the Swamp Bats, 2-1. In 2002, as more teams filled out the league, the Sanford Mainers started playing in Goodall Park, famous as the park where the Babe hit his last home run for the Boston Red Sox. Newport won again. In 2003, every state fielded a team, and the dream became a reality for the league and the many ballplayers that could now have a chance at getting into the majors. The Mainers surprised everyone by taking the championship in their second year in the league.
