Nemours Mansion & Gardens
This magnificent estate sits on 300 acres of a country estate with jardin a la francaise formal gardens and a fabulous classical French mansion, situated in Wilmington, Delaware, created by Alfred I. du Pont in 1909 and 1910, with over seventy rooms spanning close to 47,000 square feet of space that looks like a chateau that had been transported from the countryside of many European countries. The grounds of this extraordinary estate are shared with the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, with the two still owned and operated by the Nemours Foundation. This beautiful estate is part of the duPont legacy and sits on the Dupont Historic Corridor. The estate would be named after a French town that had been affiliated with Alfred's great-great-grandfather, Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours. It was designed by Carrere and Hastings in the Louis XVI-rococo style of French architecture and features outstanding rare French 18th century furniture throughout the entire mansion, along with an eclectic collection of fabulous and elegant antiques, tapestries and works of art. These range from the 16th century religious works to paintings by the finest European masters to early American works by such great American artists as Sidney Lawrence and Frederic Remington. A very rare Louis XVI musical clock from around 1785 is also displayed in a distinguished part of the mansion, created by Peter Kinzing and David Roentgen; and plays four unique tunes on a pipe organ and dulcimer. The unique jardin garden is the finest in all North America, with a boxwood garden, the Temple of Love housing a life-sized statue of Diana created in 1780 by Jean-Antoine Houdon, the Sunken gardens designed by Alfred Victor du Pont and Gabriel Massena with a 1930s statue create by Charles-Marie Sarrabezolles, the maze garden, the reflecting pool and the colonnade.

Iron Hill Museum

Old Library Museum
The Old Library Museum is one of the three specialty museums that the New Castle Historical Society operates, where changing exhibits are showcased. Housed in an old hexagonal brick building, constructed in 1892, the museum keeps the collections of the New Castle Library company in excellent condition as it brings in various complimentary displays that change on a regular basis, in a rare Victorian structure designed by Philadelphia's Frank Furness. Filled with outstanding examples of fabulous woodwork and a marvelous skylight to illuminate the beauty of its interior lobby, it is a wonderful place to peruse and learn more about the city and its earliest community. The exterior is just as interesting, and not just for the unique hexagonal shape and weathered red bricks. The double entry doors are capped by an elaborate half moon window that provides a marvelous entry way that leads into a distinguished interior with old woodworking, craftily created by the exceptional carpenters of yesterday. Past exhibitions have included childhood relics, colonial stitchery and an interesting story about the arrival and hardships of African Americans coming here to live and work; away from the confines of the south and its staunch continuation of slavery.
