Hertz Car Rental History

With over 8100 locations across the planet, Hertz is the world's largest rental car company anywhere. They are the number 1 airport brand in the US and is located in over 60 European airports. With over 30 million reservations yearly, Hertz is a fantastic partner for us to have under our discount rental car umbrella. Here are some Hertz highlights from over the years:

1910's: 1918 - Walter L. Jacobs opens his first car-rental location in Chicago. Within 5 years, he was generating annual revenue of $1,000,000.

1920's: 1923 - Jacobs sold his this rental car company to John Hertz while continuing as Hertz' top administrative executive. This rental car business, called Hertz Drive-Ur-Self System, was bought in 1926 by General Motors Corporation.

1930's: 1932 - Hertz opens the first rent-a-car facility at the Chicago Midway Airport and later that year, Hertz introduced the first Fly/Drive car rental program.

1950's: 1954 - The Hertz Corporation was listed for the 1st time on the New York Stock Exchange. Jacobs became Hertz' first President.

1970's: 1970 - Hertz establishes its Worldwide Reservations Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma & 1 year later, the Hertz' Data Center also opened in Oklahoma City. At that point, Hertz was on-line, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, all around the world.

1980's: 1987 - Hertz Instant Return streamlined the return side of the car rental process. At the car return lot, the Hertz agent would meet the returning customer with the Instant Return hand held computer. 1989, Hertz Car Rental introduces its #1 Club Gold® Service. This premium rental service provides car rental customers with the ultimate in speed & quality by eliminating unnecessary long lines and paperwork.

1990's: 1995 - Hertz introduces its NeverLost® on-board navigation system, a user friendly route-guidance system providing turn-by-turn driving directions to virtually any destination. 1997 - Hertz launches its new website, hertz.com.

2000's: 2002 - Hertz introduces SIRIUS Satellite Radio into 20,000 of its U.S. fleet. 2007 - Hertz launches "Hertz Hourly Rentals" in New York City and in Boston.
