Museum of San Diego
The maritime was started in 1948 to preserve one
of the biggest collections of historical sea vessels in the
nation, located on the San Diego Bay, the show piece of the
collection is the Star of India, which is an 1863 iron bark. It
also preserves the MacMullen Library and Research Archives on
board the 1898 ferryboat, Berkeley and publishes a quarterly
peer-reviewed journal called; A Journey of Pacific Maritime
History. Other outstanding vessels in the collection include;
the USS Dolphin, a diesel-electric submarine that was launched
in 1968 and decommissioned in 2007, the Californian, a 1984
replica of the 1847 cutter C. W. Lawrence and one of the
official tall ships of the state, B-39, a Soviet Foxtrot class
submarine, the Medea, a 1904 steam yacht that served in both of
the World Wars, the Pilot, a 1914 harbor pilot boat and the HMS
Surprise, a 1970 replica of a Royal Navy frigate that had been
used in the movie, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the
World. The museum is now in the process of acquiring the San
Salvador, a replica of Juan Cabrillo's galleon that discovered
San Diego in 1542. Another great attraction and vessel located
near by on the docks is the USS Midway aircraft carrier museum
that is a great complement to this excellent museum. The museum
has a marvelous website on the internet where you can purchase
some personal items that are sure to be the envy of all your
family and friends. They offer apparel, a pirate collection,
collectibles, the HMS Surprise collection, a Russian submarine
collection, the USS Dolphin collection, nautical gifts, videos
and DVDs, as well as posters and prints that are beautiful
examples and documents that are sure to fit into any collector's
private collections. The museum also enjoys a world renown
reputation for excellence in restoring, operating and
maintaining historical vessels and has more gorgeous ships to
visit and admire than any other museum in the world. It displays
temporary and permanent exhibits about the maritime history,
exploration, commerce and stages popular public events like the
Festival of Sail and family sleepovers on the Star of India.
Their schooner, the Californian takes passengers sailing on San
Diego Bay and they even have weekend adventures that sail to the
island of Catalina.
