Art Gallery of
Ontario
The Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) is located in
downtown Toronto, in the Grange Park district with a magnificent
collection of over 68,000 works of art that span the 1st century
to the current day sitting on 480,000 square feet of space that
includes the world's biggest collection of Canadian art that
showcases the development of the nation's heritage from
pre-Confederation days to the current period. Over half of this
magnificent collection is made up of Canadian artists' works,
along with an outstanding collection of European artworks, that
contains the most significant collection of medieval and
renaissance decorative arts outside of Europe and the United
States. Some of the more famous works include those created by
Tintoretto, Frans Hals, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Pablo Picasso,
Peter Paul Rubens, Auguste Rodin, Rembrandt van Rijin, Emile
Antoine Bourdelle, Edgar Degas, Thomas Gainsborough, Vincent van
Gogh and Anthony van Dyck. As if that isn't enough to bring
every art lover to the museum, it also houses one of the most
impressive collections of African art in North America, as well
as a contemporary art collection that illustrates the evolution
of modern artistic movements in Canada, the US and Europe that
includes works by Andy Warhol, Jenny Holzer and Claes Oldenburg.
And if that doesn't pique your curiosity and appetite, then
perhaps the Henry Moore sculpture center will since it contains
the biggest public collection of works by this British sculptor.
His bronze work, Two Large Forms created in 1966 through 1969
welcomes visitors at the museum's north facade. And today, in
keeping with web 2.0 trends, the AGO has started a social media
site called Collection X that offers users a place to share
ideas about life and art, as well as showcasing the works of
contemporary photographers and visual artists; offering users
the ability to discuss the works, upload their own content and
create online exhibitions. Other artists include; Alfred Agache,
Pieter Brueghel the Younger, Emily Carr, Giovanni del Biondo,
Carel Fabritius, Augustus John, Paul Kane, Cornelius Krieghoff,
J. E. H. MacDonald, Amadeo Modigliani, Paul Peel, Claude Monet,
Hans Holbein the Younger, Camille Pissarro, John William
Waterhouse, Tom Thomson and James Tissot.
