The Menil Collection
the collection is based in Houston, Texas and can be
referring to the magnificent museum that contains the private
art collections of the founders, Dominique de Menil and John de
Menil, or to the collection per se. Dominique was an heir to the
Schlumberger oil-drilling fortune and John had been an executive
of that company. The magnificent museum was designed by the
world famous architect, Renzo Piano and opened in 1987. It
houses the fabulous collection of the de Menils 20th century
artworks that include 15,000 paintings, rare books, sculptures,
photographs, prints and drawings; that include the works of Max
Ernst, Pablo Picasso, Yves Tanguy, Man Ray, Henri Matisse, Rene
Magritte and Marcel Duchamp. Their outstanding collection of pop
art contains works created by Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock, Cy
Twombly, Mark Rothko and Robert Rauschenberg. Another part of
this incredible collection contains antiquities and works of
tribal art, Byzantine and medieval.
