Lake Ouachita

Lake Ouachita was made by the damming of Blakely Mountain, and is
the biggest lake in the state, covering over 40,000 acres and 690
miles of magnificent shorelines. Entirely encompassed by the
Ouachita National Forest, it is near two other lakes, Hamilton and
Catherine; and with DeGray Lake to the south and the hot mineral
water springs of Hot Springs, makes this area one of the most
popular recreational destinations in the nation. The lake has become
known as the striped bass capital of the world, and with the bream,
crappie, largemouth and smallmouth bass, catfish, walleye and
spotted bass one of the finest fishing spots in the nation. Besides
the fantastic fishing, it is home to a geo-float trail that contains
many magnificent geology sights and spots that not only add to the
attractiveness of the area but enhances the tourists experience. The
geo-float is best enjoyed by a canoe, with low water bridge, class 1
and 2 white water rapids, huge boulders and quick turns making it a
challenging 10 mile trip for the avid canoeist. One of the biggest
crystal veins in the world is located here, as well as rare,
non-stinging jellyfish and sponges. The beautiful clear clean waters
bring scuba divers flocking to the area, and the spear fishing is
superb. It is one of those places where you will always have
incredible views and scenery as well as many opportunities to enjoy
nature and the serenity of solitude.
