Things to do in Anaheim

Discovery Science Center Discovery Science Center Anaheim, California
The Discovery Science Center would begin with an idea in 1984, when the Exploratory Learning Center and the Experience Center merged together and created the Discovery Museum of Orange County (DMOC), with goals of teaching children what kind of life they would have had during the turn of the 20th century in the county in an excellent interactive way, as well as trying to construct a world class hands-on science center. The group would develop their site initially, so that it now contains a rose garden, two historical houses, riparian habitat and a carriage barn, with so much more. After everything was up and running, they began the construction of their second goal, which was to build a hands-on science center. They would begin a feasibility study in 1989, to see if the city leaders would be interested in funding such a venture, since they had around three million people living in the county without any viable science teaching centers, since there are already about 200 in the United States today. The Launch Pad would open in 1993, which was a preview science center in Costa Mesa, and the Taco Bell Discovery Science Center would open in 1998. The center has celebrated its decade of discovery, with 59,000 square feet of exhibit space that is full of science interactive exhibits to spark kids' natural curiosity and imaginations. Besides taking care of the center, their staff visits over 150,000 school kids in their classrooms every year, and has become the biggest provider of water education outreach programs, and is the biggest provider of water education in the county and one of the top ten in the nation. Their newest permanent display is the Science of Hockey, that is also the first of its kind in the world, offering visitors an interactive look at the science of sport, and presented by the Anaheim Ducks, USA Hockey and the National Hockey League. Exhibits located in the center include; air and space, space exploration, discovery stadium, planetary research station, digital lab and Science of Hockey; all located on the second floor and those on the first include; Quake Zone, 4-D movie theater, dynamic earth and perception that is found on the top floor. Outside the complex is dino quest, Boeing Delta III Rocket and a space shuttle.

    Anaheim MuseumAnaheim Museum Anaheim, California
The Anaheim Museum is situated in downtown Anaheim, California and showcases the diverse heritage and history of Orange County, exploring its rich historical, cultural and artistic expression of the county; providing outstanding information about its marvelous history through the continued developments of permanent and changing exhibitions, the interpretation of its relics and the visual arts. The excellent museum is housed in an original Carnegie Library building that had been constructed in 1908 with a grant from the Carnegie Foundation. LA architect, John C. Austin would work with the frugal Scots and Germans of the city to meet the stringent costs that were put on the project, although it was desired very much by the local citizenry. So, to make sure it would be constructed, they would create a committee and then raise the funding necessary to convert the library into the museum they dreamed of. The new museum would open in 1987, with two galleries for special exhibits, a museum store and children's gallery. A mission bell from the late 18th century hangs outside the museum, a reminder of Father Junipero Serra, who had come to the region and oversaw the construction of 21 missions altogether; but most would be only a day's walk from one to the other. There is also a magnificent exhibit about the missions and the friar inside the museum. The museum's structure is now the last surviving one of the original five that had been constructed in Orange County, full of memorabilia and displays that showcase the exciting and interesting history of the city. That actually would start in 1857, when 50 Germans from San Francisco would arrive here and settle, after investing in the Los Angeles Vineyard Society. They would plant over 400,000 grapevines and by 1874, over a million gallons of wine would be harvested and made from the grapes. There are outstanding exhibits that depict this event and other significant milestones that have been achieved in the region, like the development of Disneyland and other attractions in the area. There are numerous interactive displays on the various facets of communication that is showcased in the children's gallery; and it does highlight some of the region's finest artists with rotating exhibitions installed by them.

Mother Colony House Museum Mother Colony House Museum Anaheim, California
The Mother Colony House would be one of the first buildings constructed in the city in 1857, and is classified as an American territorial style cottage that was built using redwood and contains three rooms. There is a single gable roof, with decorative roof crest and flaring eave that completely covers the front porch, with a back addition being added in the 1870s. George Hansen, an LA surveyor would be hired as the superintendent of the LA Vineyard Society, that included 50 German immigrants that came here to start the vineyards and plant over 400,000 vines, as well as begin the small settlement of Anaheim in 1857. George constructed this house for his own, and would become known as the Father of Anaheim. Numerous families would occupy the house after Hansen, and these included Senora Vicenta Sepulveda de Carrillo, who was widow of two prominent Californios, Ramon Carrillo and Thomas Yorba. She purchased the house in 1872, and twelve years later, Frederick Ruhmann, a popular well known saloon owner that had been fondly called "Five Cent Fritz" would purchase it. In 1929, the house would be saved from extinction, and then deeded over to the Mother Colony Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The house would be moved to its current location, after Marie Horstmann Dwyer donated the land, so that the colony house could be used as a meeting house for the society for the next two decades. Her husband, J. J. Dwyer, would later create an endowment fund that would save the house for future generations. It was dedicated in 1929, as the Mother Colony House, and is the oldest museum house in the county, and in 1950, it would be made a state historical landmark, and then become the city's in 1954. When Hansen constructed the house, he built only three rooms since in those days, the kitchens were usually outside the main house so that fire wouldn't burn the entire abode down if one should start, and during the summer months would keep the house cooler since it didn't have any fires going on inside. After he sold the house, it would get both and become a regular, somewhat ancient three bedroom house. Once Hansen had finished his house, he would create West, South, North and East streets to represent the city's boundaries, and planted some 40,000 willow trees to define its limits.

Anaheim Historical SocietyAnaheim Historical Society Anaheim, California
The Anaheim Historical Society would begin in 1976, after the city council had created a new Bicentennial Museum Committee to make recommendations about the idea of starting a city museum. Their first meeting would be in 1976, at the Bethel Baptist Church and drew a big crowd of citizens. Each of the people that came for that meeting had a story to tell, and it would take some time to get through them all, but the committee kept meeting through the summer, and then made their report to the council in August; and quietly went out of business. A few of the members of that committee would continue to meet at Andy Deneau's house, sharing their thoughts and ideas for a historical society. At that time, the idea of the society would be formalized, with about eight or nine citizens interested in starting the historical society. Officers would be chosen at the next meeting, but no money or funding had been found, so Andy's grandmother, Elizabeth Hargrove, would donate the first $100 so that the society could open a checking account. The next $100 would come when three of the society members were exploring one of the first houses that had been scheduled for demolition as part of the city's redevelopment project. The house was one of the few remaining houses that had a single wall construction, and laying there, on a table beside the unmade bed, were several bills that totaled $100. The society would continue to work hard and long hours to put their first event up, and they invited Miv Schaaf to be their first speaker. She had a column in the LA Times Sunday edition and was well known around the town, living in an old house in Pasadena, enjoying old houses and historic preservation. As the years passed, the collections would grow and more folks would come and visit to learn more about the city and its unique inhabitants.

Hobby City Doll and Toy MuseumHobby City Doll & Toy Museum Anaheim, California
The Hobby City Doll and Toy Museum in Anaheim, California houses over 6000 distinct dolls and toys, with everything from Star Wars to Strawberry Shortcake can be seen in this outstanding collection, as well as many rarities that include many of their European dolls, with everything housed in a half-scale copy of the White House. However, it doesn't seem to be very popular with the younger visitors since they have a very strict "hands-off" policy because of the frailty of many of the objects kept here, and they are for sale if you are interested. There are Shirley Temple dolls, clown dolls, antique dolls, with some from the Civil War period, Star Wars figurines and beautiful Japanese dolls. In fact, wherever you looked, walked or tried to find your way around the small shop, you would see more dolls than you ever imagined could fit into this space. They have just about every kind of Barbie doll ever made, dolls from Russia that were made around the turn of the 19th century, race cars, trains and all kinds of toys that will spark your interest and keep you meandering around the shop for more hours than you'd imagined. It will take you back to another era, and give you a much better idea of the pop culture that has been around for centuries. But what's even more weird is that it is free for anyone that wants to come in and browse, or spend time with the owners learning more about the many stories that involve various dolls and toys.
