The University of Vermont is actually a shortened name for the University of Vermont and State agricultural College. In the year of 1862 the college became the state of Vermont’s Land-Grant University. The college is commonly known as UVM after its Latin name the Universitas Virdis Montis which means “University of the Green Mountains.” UVM is home to several sports team but the most popular are the men and women’s ice hockey team as well as the men’s basketball team. The teams at the University of Vermont are known as the Vermont Catamounts and participate in over 20 separate varsity sports.
