Fort James Fort James St. John's Antigua and Barbuda
Fort James, Antigua and Barbuda, is a remnant of the former fort that had been constructed to protect the entrance to the harbor of St. John's Antigua that was constructed in 1706 to guard the harbor and is just one of many the British constructed in the 18th century to protect their possessions from the French. It sits on the headland that looks out over the magnificent harbor, from the northwest view, and houses a few cannons, the foundation of the former fort's walls and a powder magazine. The feature here is the beautiful view that you can get from the area, which is a perfect panorama of the city, fort and harbor area. Another unique sight are the ten cannons that still remain there today, since the majority of the forts had their cannons sold off for scrap during the 19th century, which makes this fort very special. The foundation stone for the fort would be laid with full Masonic honors in 1739, and the inscribed stone is still visible on the eastern corner, but unfortunately, some curious treasure hunters almost destroyed the inscription when they believed that there might be some coins hidden behind it. Each one of the cannons would need eleven men to operate it, with 24 pound cannon balls and an 8 pound charge, it would sail for a mile and a half; weighing in at two and a half tons each.

Fort Barrington Fort Barrington St. John's Antigua
Fort Barrington would be the second fort constructed to protect the harbor area from pirates and other invaders, sitting high atop a hill that looks out over the harbor from the south side, and constructed in 1779. There are numerous dungeon like rooms in the basement, along with a powder magazine and other interesting sights and strange feelings. The fort is a large semi-circular gun emplacement that ideally dominates the entrance and the harbor area of St. John's, built there by Admiral Barrington after he defeated the French off St. Lucia in 1778. The views are spectacular, no matter what direction you look, with the blue waters of the Caribbean coming in to lap the white sandy shores of this isolated island in the Caribbean Sea. In 1790, the fort would be strengthened to make sure that no invaders would be able to come into the harbor area and do any kind of damage to the city. The climb to the top of the hill takes about a half hour since it is 300 feet up to it. The fort has become one of the island's main tourist attractions since it is so historically significant, with a plaque installed by William Bart who was the governor of the island at the time and declared himself emperor and governor of the Leeward Islands. It is set up to be a war fortress, with many defenses and obstacles near the entrance to keep the invaders from getting too close to the fort and its cannons. It would be designed specifically for that reason, making it easier to defend, but harder to attack. The fort's tower is the best viewing place on the hilltop, with a small church sitting next to it that contains many decorations and paintings from Biblical scriptures.

Cathedral of St. John the DivineCathedral of St. John the Divine St. John's Antigua
St. John's Cathedral is well known as the St. John the Divine, the Cathedral Church of the Diocese of North Eastern Caribbean and Aruba, is an Anglican church that is located high atop a hill in St. John's, Antigua and Barbuda, with marvelous white twin towers, and constructed on top of a fossilized reef, in 1845, and today is the third such cathedral built here. Earthquakes in 1683 and 1745 would destroy earlier structures, with iron gates on the south facade flanked by pillars that showcase Biblical figures of St. John the Divine and St. John the Baptist. These statues would be rescued from a French ship that was headed to Martinique in 1756, by the HMS Temple. The current church is the successor cathedral that would be built on top of the previous churches, one after the other. The first church that was constructed here would be a wooden structure constructed in 1681, without any kinds of decorations, until the earthquake destroyed it and then in 1746, a bigger one would be constructed using English bricks, and designed by Robert Cullen. On its west end there would be a short steeple built, and when it was made into a cathedral a century later, the Diocese of Antigua would be established in 1842. Then, just a year later, the next earthquake would strike and serious damage would be done to the church. It would be partially restored, and the first bishop of the diocese would be ordained in 1843, named Bishop Daniel Davis. Eventually, they decided to construct a new church, adjacent to the old one, that still had some damage, and the new one would be planned and constructed beginning in 1845. Governor Sir Charles Augustus Fitzroy would lay the corner stone and after three years it would hold its initial service, with the consecration occurring on July 25, 1848. It would be big enough to hold 22oo congregants and had been acclaimed by a centurian in his memoirs that said the islanders would call the church, "Big Church" and it would frighten them because of its size, with them thinking that it was a symbol of English power. He stated that the church would cater to the planter or upper class, until WWI when the blacks would become more involved in it. After some time, certain blacks of the congregation would have their names written on the walls and make the entire population of them feel somewhat better.

Betty's HopeBetty's Hope Antigua and Barbuda
Betty's Hope in Antigua and Barbuda was a sugar plantation on the island that would become a livelihood for many generations of Antiguans from it beginnings in 1650 during the British colonial rule and go on to become a very successful agricultural business, becoming the first large-scale sugar plantation to operate on the island. It would be the property of the Codrington's family in 1674 and go on until 1944 and Sir Christopher Codrington, who was governor of the island at the time, would name the estate after his daughter in 1674. The plantation is no longer working, although two structures left standing are two windmills that are now in the process of being rejuvenated and restored. The great house is now in ruins, along with the still house and boiling house with its sixteen copper hoppers that boiled the cane juice in to crystalline sugar. It has been in the process of being restored and developed into an open air museum with a marvelous visitor center. It is situated in a rural region, where the geological formations are limestone in a rolling landscape. The plantation would be the property of Governor Keynel who founded the island in 1650, and after he passed on, his wife would inherit the plantation, in 1663, but she would abandon it in 1666, when the French would occupy the islands, but when the British liberated it in 1674, they gave the estate back to the Codrington family who had been living in Barbados, since earlier owners had been disloyal to the crown. When the Codrington family returned, they would focus on sugar mostly, while the rest of the island would concentrate on ginger crops, indigo and tobacco. The family would develop the sugar plantation and distinguish themselves as the most efficient large-scale sugar plantation on the island, with two members of the family becoming governors from 1689 until 1704, while the remainder of the family would become more influential and prosperous.

Museum of Antigua and BarbudaMuseum of Antigua and Barbuda St. John, Antigua
The Museum of Antigua and Barbuda is located in St. John's Antigua and Barbuda, situated in the colonial courthouse that had been constructed in 1747 on the site of the city's firs marketplace, and is now the oldest structure in the city still in use. The museum highlights Arawak and colonial relics that have been discovered at archaeological excavations and it showcases a life-sized replica of an Arawak house, Viv Richards cricket bat, models of sugar plantations and a history of the island. The museum houses numerous galleries that include; culture, prehistory, natural, history, peoples and flora and fauna. The island has an outstanding history, especially since it is a thousand miles from Jamaica, to its east, sitting almost perfectly in the middle of the Caribbean sea and just half that distance from Trinidad on the South American coast. The land mass area of the island is 108 square miles, with a population of about 80,000, with its days and nights cooled by the local trade winds. The island would be colonized just to produce sugar, without any serious attempts at establishing a city or town until 1632 when a group of Englishmen would arrive here under the leadership of Edward Warner, who had come here from St. Kitts. The settlement that they began would be continuously harassed by the Caribs, as well as any and all wars between the French, English and Dutch. Those early settlers would grow cotton, ginger, tobacco and indigo, with sugar eventually becoming significant.
