    Shedd AquariumShedd Aquarium Chicago, Illinois
The John G. Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, Illinois is an indoor public aquarium that opened in 1930 and today houses more than 25,000 fish and had been the biggest in the world with 5 million gallons of water held in their various tanks. The Shedd is the first inland aquarium in the world with a permanent saltwater fish collection and it is also part of the Museum Campus Chicago, welcoming 2 million visitors a year. It was the most visited aquarium in the nation during 2005 and 2007; even surpassing the Field Museum as the most favorite cultural attraction in the city of Chicago. It is home to 1500 species of marine animals, insects, amphibians, birds, fish and snakes, winning many awards over the decades. The Shedd would have to create a custom-made railroad car, named the Nautilus, so that they could transport fish from Key West to Chicago, as well as salt water. It would take 20 railroad tank cars to make eight round trips to carry a million gallons of saltwater for the saltwater exhibits, in 1930, and the Nautilus would run until 1959. When the city hosted its second World's Fair in 1933, the aquarium would get an international audience that would catapult the outstanding aquarium into a world class destination. It would open one of its most popular exhibits in 1971, which would reproduce a Caribbean coral reef, and the aquarium would open its oceanarium in 1991, that contains many exciting marine animals that included beluga whales and Pacific white-sided dolphins. It's newest exhibit opened in 2003, which is called the Wild Reef and is located two floors below the main building with a 750,000 gallon tank that has recreated a Philippine coral reef, with living coral, a collection of sharks and many species of fish and rays. The Shedd houses five permanent exhibits that include; Caribbean Reef, Waters of the World, Wild Reef, Amazon Rising and the Oceanarium. One of the most unique and interesting specimens that lives at the aquarium is old Granddad, an Australian lungfish that was acquired in 1933 and is believed to be the oldest fish in any aquarium in the world.

    Brookfield ZooBrookfield Zoo Chicago, Illinois
The Brookfield Zoo is located in the Chicago, Illinois suburb of Brookfield sitting on 216 acres of marvelous land housing some 450 species of animals. It is also known as the Chicago Zoological Park and opened in 1934, getting international attention for its unique use of ditches and moats, instead of the usual cages, to keep the animals separated from their visitors, as well as other animals. It was also the first in the nation to showcase giant pandas, with one, Su Lin, being taxidermied and housed in the Field Museum of Natural History. It would construct the first indoor dolphin exhibit in the nation, in 1960, and during the 1980s would open Tropic World that contained the world's first indoor rain forest simulation, which would become the world's biggest indoor zoo exhibit in the world. One of the most famous residents here is probably Ziggy, a 6.5 ton bull elephant that had been kept inside an enclosure for three decades after it had attacked its trainer in 1941. Ziggy had been purchased by theater empresario, Florenz Ziegfield, as a birthday present for his daughter, Patricia, but had to be donated to the zoo when he would outgrow his enclosure on the Ziegfield's manor grounds in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY. He would gain a cult following during the 1960s and 1970s, and would be released in 1970 with much fanfare, but would fall into his exhibit's moat in 1975 and pass on, seven months later. Another would be Olga, the Atlantic walrus that became one of the most popular attraction during the period between 1962 and 1988; and then there was Binta Jua, a female Western lowland gorilla, who in 1996, would save a boy who had fallen into her enclosure and she would carefully cradle the boy and bring him to her trainers.

Chicago History MuseumChicago History Museum Chicago, Illinois
The Chicago History Museum had been better known as the Chicago Historical Society and was started in 1856 to study and interpret the city's history, and is located in Lincoln Park, getting its new name in 2006. The structure that houses the museum had been built during 1932 by the WPA in hopes of expanding their public museum and created in the Federal style with a limestone exterior that opened in 1972. The next opening would be in 1988 after getting another expansion and refacing the exterior to match the remainder of the structure. In 2006, the first passenger car that had operated on the city's L system in 1893 would be brought to the museum and restored to its former pristine condition. The museum contains one of the city's most significant collection of materials that pertain to the local history, as well as exhibits, a research library that houses, paintings, photographs, books and other published materials, sculptures and manuscripts. There are more than 50,000 pieces in the costume and textile collection that dates from the latter 19th century to the current day, along with couture pieces that were created by well known city companies and designers that had been worn by the rich and famous of the city back in the day. Many consider it to be the second biggest collection in the nation and in 2007, when the curator of the Chicago Postcard Museum passed on, the entire collection was added to the museum's. During 1920, the society had bought the huge collection of Charles F. Gunther so that it could change its current image of a research facility to a public museum, and many of those pieces were related to Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War. That collection includes Lincoln's deathbed and numerous pieces of furniture from the room where he died in the Petersen house, as well as clothes that he and Mary Todd Lincoln wore the night he was murdered.

Glessner House MuseumGlessner House Museum Chicago, Illinois
The John J. Glessner House in Chicago, Illinois is run as the Glessner House Museum, since it is such a significant 19th century residence that was designed in 1885-86 by architect, Henry Robson Richardson and then completed in 1887. It would become a Chicago landmark in 1970, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970, and then a National Historic Landmark in 1976. John Jacob Glessner had been a partner in the firm of Warder, Bushnell & Glessner, a farm machinery manufacturer that was had been headquartered in Springfield, Ohio; but after his marriage to Frances Macbeth, he would relocate to Chicago and open a branch office. In 19o2, that company and four others, that included McCormick and Deering would merge and become the International Harvester company that would become the fourth biggest in the nation, with John becoming the vice president, a position that he would hold until his death in 1936, at the age of 92. In the late 19th century, the city's most prestigious area to live in would be Prairie Avenue on the South Side, so that is where Glessner decided to construct his house, choosing one of the best architects in the country, H. H. Richardson. After John passed on, the house would be donated to the American Institute of Architects that would return it to the family when they realized that they couldn't afford to keep it up, and in 1937, the family would donate the house to the Armour Institute, which has grown into the Illinois Institute of Technology. The institute would lease the house to the Lithographic Technical Foundation in 1945, who in turn would install large printing presses in quite a few of the rooms and began research for the printing industry. In the early 1960s, the foundation would move to Pittsburgh and the house would be left to deteriorate and almost be demolished. But a group of architects and preservation conscious citizens would get together and save the magnificent house in 1966, and after a few months, the family descendants would began bringing back the original furnishings. It would open in 1971 as a museum with public tours offered. Many rooms have been restored to their original condition, with outstanding decorative arts and furnishings, since the Glessners had been such astute collectors of both American and English crafts and arts.
