National Peanut Festival
Here’s a fun fact about the area: somewhere around half of the peanuts produced in the United States are done so within 100 miles of the city of Dothan, Alabama. Perhaps now it comes as no surprise that Dothan also plays host to the United States’ largest peanut festival, the National Peanut Festival. Every fall, sometime in late October lasting though to November, the National Peanut Festival is thrown to honor peanut growers and celebrate the peanut’s harvest season. The number of activities and events at each festival are just about countless. Live concerts, arts & crafts exhibits, beauty pageants and, of course, carnival rides are just a few of the revels that everyone can enjoy at the National Peanut Festival. Music artists such as Eric Church and Lady Antebellum have performed at the Festival. Various contests are held throughout the course of the Festival too, covering just about anything in agriculture, farming, and arts & crafts. The big finale to the Festival is the two-hour long themed parade, complete with floats and music. It won’t be hard to get you’re fair share of peanuts while having a blast at the National Peanut Festival, but that goes without saying.

U.S. Army Aviation Museum
Not too far from Dothan is Fort Rucker, Alabama. Fork Rucker, near the city of Ozark, Alabama, is home to the United States Army Aviation Museum. This museum has about 50 aircraft on display to the public with relics as old as the Model B biplane created by the Wright brothers. The museum itself holds more than 160 different aircraft and as many as 3,000 historical artifacts. It also boasts the largest collection of helicopters by any single museum in the entire world. Don’t worry about the cost of visiting this incredible history-filled place because the entrance fee is free. The museum is also open nearly all year round, save for New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and Thanksgiving Day. If you want a more in-depth idea of what the museum has to offer, tour guides are available upon request. You’ll be sure to find an exhibit that suits you among the 9 major exhibits provided. These exhibits include a Vietnam Memorial, the Army Aviation Hall of Fame, The Wright Stuff (an exhibit that showcases the work of the Wright brothers), The Louisiana Maneuvers, Dustoff (A medical helicopter section), “Bravo Blues”, Miss Clawd IV, Operation Desert Storm, and a statuary with bronzed versions of various important figures in Army aviation history. This museum is sure to be a great time for the whole family.

Dothan Area Botanical Gardens
If you happen to be looking for something a little more relaxing with fresh air, the Dothan Area Botanical Gardens are always a quaint getaway while still enjoying one of the many great attractions that Dothan has to offer. The Gardens cover 50 acres of nature trails to view the grounds, nurtured gardens with some of the most incredible plants, and the beautiful scenery that comes with the untouched landscape of southeastern Alabama woodland. The gardens are open year round so a visit can be made any time of the year. These magical gardens will have you in a state of tranquility and serenity that will last for the rest of your most precious day. This is a great way to spend a few hours while you are visiting the beautiful city of Dothan. Although it’s free admission, donations are taken appreciatively to keep these beautiful gardens kempt. The whole family can enjoy a peaceful outing to the Dothan Area Botanical Gardens, even the pet dog (so long as it is kept on a leash). If you feel like spending the afternoon at the gardens, picnic tables are available if you wish to enjoy an outdoor meal. With such a variety of gardens, from the Rose garden to the Azalea garden and even to the Butterfly garden, it’s almost impossible to not enjoy what the Botanical Gardens have to offer.

Water World
Looking for a wet getaway? Dothan’s very own Water World is the place you might be looking for. With splash-filled attractions galore, Water World is sure to cool you down during those hot summer days while having a blast of a time doing so. A huge wavepool will throw you and your friends around as you hang out in the 450,000 storm of a pool. The triple flume slide allows three people to go roaring down 400 ft. long slides that carry you to the bottom of a hill right into a pool. The tadpole hole kiddie pool lets the whole family enjoy the water park as it provides entertainment for the youngest members of the group. Perhaps the most popular attraction, the Great White water slide sends you down the side of a 41 ft. half pipe on a tube where you will get the thrill of your life as you go back and forth on the giant slide. Of course, you can always take a break from the action and grab a bite to eat at the concession stand and take a rest at the picnic pavilion.
