Things to do in Gothenburg

  • Gotaplatsen & Art Museum Gotaplatsen & Art Museum Gothenburg, Sweden
Gotaplatsen is one of the main public squares in the city of Gothenburg, which is also known as Goteborg, Sweden; the square is located at the southern end of the Kungsportsavenyn, also known as the King's Gate Avenue; which is the main thoroughfare in this wonderful city. The square was constructed in 1923, during the city's 300th anniversary and is the cultural center for Gothenburg. Surrounding this magnificent square is the Concert Hall where the symphony performs, the Museum of Art, the city's theater and the library. In the very center of it is a huge statue that has come to be one of the major symbols for Gothenburg; it is Poseidon created by Carl Milles; a Swedish sculptor of great renown, especially for his marvelous fountains. The statue of Poseidon was first shown in 1931, and an old wives' tale is that if you should photograph the statue, you would remain unmarried. The view from the steps of the Art Museum is said to be beautiful as you can look down the length of the King's Gate Avenue.  It is the main place for many of the city's events, like concerts, celebrations and rallies.  Just opposite of the statue and the avenue is the Goteborg Museum of Art that is well known for its beautiful Nordic art from the late 1800s and the extravagantly decorated Furstenberg Gallery that was donated to the museum by Pontus Furstenberg and his wife Gothilda. Some of the more well known artists shown here include; P.S. Kroyer, Carl Larsson, Rembrandt, George Braque, Picasso, Degas and Anders Zorn. There are many more works of art that are older and more contemporary, Nordic and international; and the museum has been given the three stars in the Michelin Guide. The museum was also constructed in 1923, as part of the square, and architect Sigfrid Ericson used a Neo-Classical design style to complete the Nordic architecture. It was constructed using Gothenburg brick, which is yellowish and used in most of the city's buildings. It closes in the square at the end of Kungsportsavenyn or King's Gate Avenue.

  • Masthuggskyrkan
The Masthuggskyrkan church that belongs to the Diocese of Gothenburg and has been an important building in the city's history. It is located on the side of a mountain giving marvelous panoramic views of the city and is considered to be one of the most important attractions to visitors coming here. It is part of the Orgryte Gamla Kyrka church complex and was made famous by the influx of immigrants that came to this city. It contains two huge bells, one weighing 3 tons and the other 2 tons. The interior is beautiful with its Viking style ornamental façade entwined with Christian symbolism. The acoustics are incredible as you can stand at the entrance and whisper something that can be heard at the altar on the opposite end. The church's architect was Sigfrid Ericcson who designed many other memorable buildings in the city. The inside is filled with wooden beams, a high center nave, whitewashed walls and the pillars are beautifully sculpted.

  • Goteborg Natural History MuseumGoteborg Natural History Museum Gothenburg, Sweden
This museum opened in 1833, and is the oldest in the city. The entire collection was moved to another building in 1923 in the Slottsskogen park, and is well known for its stuffed blue whale display and African elephant. On the first floor, amphibians, reptiles and fish exhibits are shown with crustaceans and insects also on the floor. Other permanent exhibits include the blue whale, which was caught in 1865, along with other whales and seals in the Valsalen area. The whale is a baby measuring 15 meters long, and is the only stuffed blue whale in existence. Each year the mouth is opened to allow you to enter inside where wooden mahogany benches sit for your pleasure to view the remarkable sight. The second floor holds the birds and mammals, with the African elephant, bears, lions, antelopes, monkeys, apes, rhino, hippo and lions beside many other natural wonders. Birds have been assembled from all over the world, and one area contains the Scandinavian birds sitting in their nests. There are a set of Siamese twins here, along with other natural curiosities that were preserved from the 19th century. The second floor also houses five scenes that were created by Olof Gylling, that represent Swedish scenes with intriguing fauna; Hornborgasjon Lake that is famous for its bird varieties, Stora Karlso which is a steep island in the Baltic Sea, Maklappen by Falsterbo which lies in the southern areas of the country, a forest from the northern Jamtland and Tjiskavaara that is located high in the mountains of Lapland. Many collections from all over the world have been brought here, with the oldest being from the 18th century, when the collection began. All total, there are almost 10 million animals in the entire zoological collection, that include bugs, beetles, molluscs, spiders, millipedes and centipedes. The museum contains the most complete collection of Swedish west coast marine animals in the world. In the vertebrate collections some 100,000 specimens are housed with skins, specimens and eggs saved in alcohol. There are a large number of photographs and a wonderful geological collection.

  •  Goteborg Maritama Upplevelsecentrum
This is the world's biggest ship museum, with 20 various types of ships including a submarine, towboat, destroyer, lighthouse ship and more. It is very interesting, especially if you have never been on a submarine before, as most of us haven't. The passageways are small and narrow, with hatchways difficult to maneuver if you aren't careful. You have to bend your head down and lift a leg to climb over the bottom metal part and it can be tricky if you are older. The cabins aren't much bigger, and to have to live in a bunk while at sea is also an experience you wouldn't want unless forced to. It takes a special kind of person to be able to live any length of time underwater in a confined space and you definitely can't be nervous about being closed in.

  • Gamla Alvsborgs Slottsruin Fortress of Alvsborg Engraving 1690-1710 Gothenburg, Sweden
The Alvsborg fortress was built in the mid 14th century just west of where the city of Gothenburg would later be built. It was on the south side of the Gota River and was very important in the protection of the area. It was only a wooden structure at first, but then was attacked many times by invading forces, mostly the Danes. It was won by the Danes in 1455, and then was won back by the Swedes in 1471. Prince Christian burned in down in 1502, had it rebuilt and stayed in Danish possession until 1523, then strengthened and manned with more troops. In the Nordic Seven Years' War, the Danes attacked again and won the castle over, but was ransomed by the government for 150,000 silver dollars. It was besieged in 1565, but held out, and was finally built of block in the early 1600s. During 1612, the Danes retook the castle, after bombarding it with cannons and was returned to Sweden for one million silver coins this time. It was completely renovated in the mid 1600s, although its importance was on the wane. The castle never regained its importance to the Swedish government since the Danes weren't attacking it anymore and it began to fall into the ruins that exist there today. It has been excavated many times by archaeologists during the early 1900s and some question has been raised about rebuilding the historic monument, although it hasn't happened. Now housing projects have been built around the old ruins and it may end up being razed, but until that happens it is a marvelous place to explore and envision the years that is was inhabited.

  • Orgryte Gamla Kyrka
The oldest congregation in the city is the Orgryte Gamla Kyrka, a very old church complex that dates back to the 11th century and made up of three smaller churches. The first church was constructed on the land and was only a 9 meter stave church that was replaced in the 13th century with a Roman stone church, which made it the perfect place to be when any invading or attacking armies were coming into the city. In the end of the 1800s, another church was necessary because the membership had grown, which was a neo-Gothic styled church that was built under the leadership of Bishop Edvard Rodhe. It contains roco ceiling frescoes in many bright colors with vibrant motifs that add to the overall beauty of the church. It is one of the major religious centers in the city and has grown into a very popular tourist attraction. They hold fairs, lectures, workshops and seminars their for both adults and children.

  • Skansen KronanSkansen Kronan Gothenburg, Sweden
Skansen Kronan means redoubt crown, and this structure is what was called a redoubt in Gothenburg, Sweden built in 1687 to the specifications of Erik Dahlberg. The main fortress and other redoubt called Skansen Lejonet were constructed to protect the new city of Gothenburg from invading Danes from the south, much the same as the Alvsborg Fortress to the north. It was originally outside the walls of the city, but today is on a hill in the center of the city in an area called Haga. Until 2004, it was used as a military museum, but now is used very little; more a party place since it looks out over the city. The redoubt was never attacked and the cannons inside never fired, but it was part of a protective net around the city and was a deterrent to invading armies, most particularly the Danes. It was used to house the homeless in the 1850s, and later became a prison with the inmates being held in the catacombs under the main structure. The prisoners were allowed to make various trinkets, which they could sell on Sundays when the city's residents would come up the hill to buy them or just make fun o them. It is privately owned and has various events held there like weddings, banquets, parties and conferences.

The six areas include; the gallery which houses temporary exhibits showing how different things work; the kalejdo which is an exhibit about the human body, atoms, space and more; the rainforest show tropical animals in their natural habitats; explora is about communication and robots; the aquariaroom contains marine animals and the path of the water displays Sweden's reptiles and fish.

  • Botaniski Tradgard
The Gothenburg botanical garden is quite different than most other traditional botanical gardens in Europe and was thought of and planned by the city. The garden grows about 16,000 various species of plants and the rock garden that is found here is very famous, and has received three stars from the Michelin Guide.
