  • Elizabeth Park Rose Gardens Elizabeth Park Gardens in Hartford

  • Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of  Art
    Was founded in 1842 by Daniel Wadsworth a Hartford art enthusiast (1771-1848) who wanted to share the wonders of the art with the public.  During the mid nineteenth century average citizens had little or no exposure to fine art, beautiful artifact and one of a kind antiquities.  Only the very wealthy purchased paintings and collectibles the Museum was named Atheneum in honor of Athena the Greek goddess of wisdom.  The Wadsworth Museum was the first American Museum to acquire works of art from famous artists such as: Salvador Dali, Caravaggio, Frederic Church, Piet Mondrian, Joseph Cornell along with many other talented, famous artists.  The permanent collection features several one of a kind treasures sure to keep your attention for hours. From American Paintings, Contemporary Art, European Art, American Decorative Arts, Costume & Textiles and European Decorative Arts.  The Museum offers a variety of exhibits from classical to contemporary offering something for everyone.

State Capitol
Overlooks the beautiful 41 acres of Bushnell Memorial Park, the State Capitol opened in 1879 and is home to state executive offices and legislative chambers.  The building was constructed by the city of Hartford with custom plans designed by the well known architect Richard Upjohn.  The State Capitol building is constructed of New England marble and granite crowned with a gold leaf dome.     Is a popular tourist attraction in Hartford, this beautiful statue of Lafayette was created by Paul Wayland Bartlett.  Paul Bartlett was born in New Haven, Connecticut and moved to France as a child and spent most of his life there.  The Lafayette Statue was originally created to stand in the courtyard of the Louvre in Paris and the sculpture was placed there.  During 1930 money was donated to cast a replication of a bronze sculpture for Hartford.  The Lafayette Sculpture was designed in 1907 and the bronze copy was cast and dedicated to Hartford in 1932.  Lafayette was a French nobleman who was known in history as the Marquis de Lafayette (1757-1834).  In 1777 at the young age of 19, Lafayette came to America to volunteer in the Revolutionary War.  Lafayette was appointed to a major-general and helped secure military assistance from France.

    Is a stunning, brownstone Gothic monument standing 116 feet high.  The Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch was designed by a Hartford architect George Keller and was built at the cost of $50,000 in 1886.  The beautiful monument features depicting scenes from the Civil War and is dedicated to the 4,000 Hartford citizens who served in the Civil War.  The monument is topped with statues of the original angels Gabriel and Raphael.  Visitors can take a guided tour of the arch and take a journey up the winding 97 step staircase to the top offering breathtaking views of the State Capitol, downtown Hartford and Bushnell Park.
