Things to do in Hawaii

  • Diamond Head Honolulu Diamond Head Honolulu, Hawaii
Diamond Head, on the south east coast of O'ahu near the end of Waikiki, looks out over the beautiful clear aqua waters of the Pacific Ocean, is the world's most famous volcano crater. Long ago it was Laeahi for the ancient Hawaiians, which could be interpreted as "brow of the tuna" and if you have a chance to see the silhouette of this magnificent crater from Waikiki, then you will see the shape. British sailors coming to the island in the 1800s named it Diamond Head; since they viewed the great crater some ways off and saw the glittering of the calcite crystals. They thought for sure that they had come upon some island that was full of diamonds in the soil. The volcano hasn't erupted in over 150,000 years and is 3520 feet in diameter and 760 feet deep. Fort Ruger, a main defense fortification was set down into the crater, and a battery of canons were arranged in the crater so that they were completely hidden and also protected from invading ships. In 1910, an observation deck was built at the summit, which allowed for target sighting and a four level underground compound was constructed into the walls for the command post. For easier access to the fort, a 580 foot tunnel was built by digging through the walls of the crater. The observation deck and underground compound is no longer in use since radar is much easier and more precise, but the evidence is still there, along the paved Diamond Head trail; which can be fairly steep in places. Two sets of stairs lead up the walls, one has 99 steps and the other has 76, with a 225 foot unlighted tunnel. It is a decent hike, moderate at times, but well worth any effort as you reach the top and look out over the magnificent views of the island and ocean. The trail is 1 and 3/4 miles long to the top, and should normally take an hour and a half. The top affords no shade at all, so wear a hat, go early or bring an umbrella to keep the hot blistering sun off you. Water is always an essential when going hiking, whether you know the route or not, so take plenty; and a flashlight to travel through the darkened tunnel, one never knows what might be lurking or crawling along the ground. There are facilities at the trailhead, so you are covered in that area.

  • Hawaii Shark Encounters
This is one educational tour that will give you more excitement than any you have ever experienced in your life. The Hawaii Shark Encounters is just that, a face to face with the most dangerous killing machine in the ocean depths. The tour company is located on the north shore of Oahu, and brings you out into the ocean, some three miles off shore, and here you will see Galapagos and sandbar sharks in their own natural habitat, all in the safety of a steel and safety glass cage. You won't need to learn how to scuba dive or use any kind of special equipment, as you enter the cage from the top and use only a diving mask and snorkel to watch these monstrous predators swim past your cage, just waiting for a chase to bang into you and scare the beejeebers out of you. The glass is made of poly fibers and is big enough for you to look out and see the sharks and other huge fish that swim by your face. These creatures have a natural inquisitiveness so they will continue to swim as close to the cage as possible, giving you the lifetime chance to see them eyeball to eyeball. One of the most important aspects of the tour is the educational information that you will learn. The fantastic facts about shark behavior and biology, conservation issues and ocean life in general. You will learn about the importance of sharks in the Hawaiian culture and mythology, since the natives revere the sharks that have been such a large part of their history and belief. You can become involved in shark research projects that are done by the company, for the benefit of all, and learn how to become an ambassador for conservation. Presently, an estimated 60 % of the shark population of the world has been killed off and their numbers just keep falling. With your own personal shark encounter, the company hopes to show you the beauty and the importance sharks have in our world, and they have more to fear from us, than we from them. These creatures of the deep have been swimming in the seas since the earliest times of this earth, when dinosaurs walked the earth, these predators were swimming in the oceans darkness. The oceans, and people need the sharks to continue their special skills for the preservation and continuation of the plethora of fish species that swim in the deep blue.

  • Pearl Harbor Honolulu
No matter what age you are, no matter where you came from, the most impressive place you could visit in Hawaii is the Pearl Harbor base, where on December 7, 1941, at 7:55 AM, 183 Japanese fighter planes dropped down out of a cloudless sky to destroy the United States Pacific Fleet that was sitting like ducks at Pearl Harbor. This was the straw that broke the camel's back and put the United States into the second World War, and changed the face of the earth and history forever. This one catastrophic disaster was the most horrific and detrimental event in the history of the nation, only surpassed by the worst nightmare we could ever face in New York City in 2001. But there is another side to the magnificent island that is more than a historic site where over 1000 sailors rest in peace in the depths of the hull of the U.S.S. Arizona, and numerous other vessels. The soft warm gentle breezes that caress your skin and the tantalizing scents of the plethora of tropical flowers are always here to greet your arrival, but it isn't long before this memory permeates your being and you remember. The battleship Arizona has a memorial here to help remind you, with the USS Bowfin submarine museum and park, the Bowfin sinking an astonishing 44 ships during her frenzy to avenge her fallen comrades, and the USS Missouri Battleship Memorial, where General Douglas MacArthur accepted the surrender of Japan, after leaving Nagasaki and Hiroshima in nuclear dust. The contrast is amazing and quite startling, but a must visit for every red blooded American born on our soil or coming here from another to start a new life full of opportunities and freedoms that are unmatched anywhere in the world today.

  • Waimoku Falls Haleakala National ParkWaimoku Falls Haleakala National Park Hawaii
The Haleakala National Park on Maui island in Hawaii is a spectacular park of over 30,000 acres with almost 80% of it a wilderness refuge. Originally part of the Hawaii National Park, with the volcanoes of Mauna Loa and Kilauea on the island of Hawaii, in 1916, the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park became a separate entity in 1980. Haleakala is Hawaiian for "house of the sun" and there is a story about the demigod Maui who put the sun in a prison here so that the daylight would be longer. One of the main features of the park is the dormant volcano Haleakala, that erupted in 1490 and hasn't puffed a plume since then, and the other is a beautiful waterfall called Waimoku Falls, pictured to the right. The park has been divided in two, the summit and the coastal Kipahulu region. These two areas bring an average of 1,450,000 visitors here every year. On the summit, Haleakala Crater rests from her last explosion, while the crater is almost 7 miles across, and 2 miles wide; going down some 2600 feet before hitting the bottom. The crater's insides are pitted with many volcanic features, especially the big cinder cones. Every morning, throngs of visitors come to the edge of the crater to witness the awesome sunrises and just as many come again in the late afternoon to view the incredible sunsets. Another wonderful attraction in the park is Hosmer's Grove, with unique specimens of foreign trees; like the deodar that comes from the Himalayas, the eucalyptus from Australia, the sugi from Japan and many from the United States mainland, like the spruce, cypress, fir and pine. There are many native trees and plants found here, but they aren't too common as the taller foreign trees allow little light to stream through. This area is well known for its amateur astronomy, with the rentals of binoculars and telescopes available nearby. Often you can see the state's bird, the nene or Hawaiian geese, which were gone from the park until 1946, when the Boy Scouts brought them back, in their backpacks. The Pipiwai Trail, that goes above the Seven Sacred Pools, and follows the Pipiwai Steam happens to be one of the best hiking trails on the island of Maui and is 4 miles long, taking anywhere from 2.5 hours to 4 hours depending on how much you love mother nature and all the spectacular sights that you will see in your travels. The trail goes up some 650 feet, with the end being the most magnificent waterfalls you have ever seen. Dropping down over 400 feet aside the lava rock walls and into a boulder strewn pool so beautiful you will be so glad you hiked the 4 miles.

  •  Hang Gliding Maui
Hang Gliding Maui is the place to come and learn about hang gliding and take the plunge with one of their fantastic powered hang gliders and see the island like no others can, unless they also come and hang glide. You will take an interactive lesson using an airborne XT 912, which is a micro light aircraft that has a hang gliding wing and a weight shift operation, quite like the regular hang gliders, but these are powered by 912cc 4 cycle Rotax aircraft engines. Called a micro light trike, this aircraft will give you the full experience of hang gliding, but with a wider range and better suited for any kind of weather. It also affords you more air time, and the added features of comfort and convenience. Armin Engert began the company in 1990, and is a certified Ultra-light instructor and certified Tandem Hang Gliding pilot. He has been flying these marvelous machines since 1982, and has over 13,000 hours of flight. The company has been shown on television numerous times, the best known being the MTV host for Jenny McCarthy who flew with Armin for the show Extreme Comedy.

  • Hawaii Forest and Trail Kailua-Kona Hawaii Forest and Trail Kailua-Kona Hawaii
Hawaii is actually a hot spot for volcanic growth, each island appearing after being built up from the floor of the ocean, with streams of lava continuously pouring out and building upon the harden lava rock that has flowed out for millions of years. During the past 44 million years, the volcanic eruptions have created 82 volcanoes and the many islands of Hawaii. Hawaii is the youngest, which is still being created, and two of the world's most active volcanoes, Kilauea and Muana Loa, continue to build more land, or rather rock that eventually turns into the beautiful and exotic islands that are located there today. The exact formula and process makes for interesting reading and a continuation of geology study for the world's scientists. Take for instance the big island of Hawaii, which is called a geologic microcosm that contains 5 sub aerial volcanoes, which mean they are above the water's level. Kohala is the oldest of the volcanoes that are part of the island of Hawaii, with geologists thinking that the volcano erupted over 60,000 years ago, with the oldest lava being read at 460,000 years. The Hawaii Forest and Trail was the dream of Rob Pacheco and his wife, Cindy, after having visited the big island over 15 years ago, and knew that the Hawaiian Islands held divers and special ecosystems that rival anywhere on earth. Since it isolated in the middle of the Pacific and has such a marvelous geology, Rob knew he had found a paradise to study the evolutionary biology, conservation theories, extinction and endangered species that were ripe for an kind of in-depth study. Rob had been trained as a naturalist at the University of Colorado in Boulder, and realized that the majority of residents and tourists were viewing only the surface beauty, without knowing the incredible natural history of Hawaii. It wasn't long before Rob was able to intertwine his passion with a vision, sharing his love for natural history with the people here and at the same time save the island's endangered environment by enlightening them about these dangers and conservation programs. His vision seemed to come at just the right moment when the entire world was realizing that ecotourism was blossoming into a giant new venture, and with his wife's assistance, they built the Hawaii Forest & Trail.  Rob knew that he would have to begin partnerships with numerous landowners and other agencies that would allow the tours to visit their private holdings, where the remote and wild native ecosystems were and had not been accessible before. His company has created such a nurturing partnerships with these individuals that he is one of the few in the state that is allowed to do this. He also needed to have knowledgeable guides that were qualified and interested in his ideals to lead the groups through the landscapes. In 1994, Rob started his new adventure company and starting leading the groups himself, spending much time and consideration to find the perfect people that would help his company grow, and give the careful consideration to the environment that would be needed. Handpicking his guides, he made sure that they were knowledgeable in biology, Hawaiian history, geology and a lot of natural field experience; spiced up with the passion and enthusiasm for the tours. He have managed to pull it all together, and today the results are wonderful, and will be exciting, as well as educational for those taking advantage of his company and their tours.

  • Kilauea Hawaii Volcanoes National ParkHawaii Volcanoes National Park Hawaii
The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park showcases the fruition of over 70 million years of volcanism, migration and evolution; a continual process that has forced bare land from the sea bottoms and grown marvelous and unique ecosystems, as well as a special human culture. The park contains two of the world's most active volcanoes and will give you insights into the birth and subsequent growth of the Hawaiian Islands and the most majestic sights of incredible volcanic landscapes that can be found anywhere on this planet. Because of the magnificent values of the park, it has been given the distinct recognition of being an International Biosphere Reserve, in 1980, and is the state's only World Heritage Site, which it received in 1987. Started to save the natural habitat of Mauna Loa and Kilauea, the park has become a refuge for many of the island's native plants and animals, as well as giving us a view into man's past. The park's managers and guides continually strive to protect the resources and encourage understanding and appreciation for the park by the millions of visitors that come here.  There is much to be told about this spectacular set of islands, but the real adventure involves going there to see and learn about the fantastic history about this glorious and beautiful place, in fact, one of the most beautiful places on the earth, since it has been set apart from any mainland by over 2000 miles. This has allowed the special flora and fauna, most of which can't be found anywhere else in the world; as well as the unique people that have inhabited the islands for millennia. Because it has become part of the United States, and it is such a favorite place to visit, outside forces have come into the state and many unnatural changes are occurring which threaten the natural order that was here. Now is the time for those of you that are interested in a truly magnificent paradise to take advantage of visiting there before any disastrous events have happened.

  • Waimea Canyon Waimea Canyon Hawaii
Waimea Canyon is a huge canyon system that is 10 miles long and in spots over 3000 feet deep; on the western side of the Kaua'i in Hawaii. The canyon was created by the incision deep into the Waimea River that was caused by the great amount of rainfall that has fallen on the island's main peak, Mount Wai'ale'ale, one of the wettest areas on the planet. The canyon has been carved out of the lava rock that make up the walls of it, as generations of changes occurred that affected the outcome. This particular canyon is unique in its geologic history, since it was formed by the constant erosion that went on, as well as the catastrophic collapse of the volcano that made the island. Just as the other islands have been created, Kaua'i is the top of a volcano that rose up from the ocean's floor and is dated to over 5 million years, the oldest of the islands. The state park contains 1866 acres and has become one of the best attractions on the island giving visitors a marvelous wilderness area that holds many awesome hiking trails. The sights and views are some of the best in the world, because of the uniqueness of the plants and animals found here. Many of the views are breathtaking and extremely beautiful which is why so many people come here, escaping the crowded areas of the United States and the cheap tricks that many tourist traps have used to entice people to come there and spend their hard earned money. It is the biggest canyon in the Pacific, and though it is smaller than the Grand Canyon, it easily rivals that canyon in beauty, sights and natural wonders. Koke State Park protects it, containing some 4300 acres of land itself, and has 45 miles of trails that go through and into the canyon and the Alakai Swamp close by.

  • Molokai Museum and Cultural Center Kualapuu
Molokai is the fifth largest island in the state of Hawaii, and is well known for the pristineness and serene surroundings; that include the local people. It is one of the islands that still remains untarnished by the outside world, commercialism and politics. It is a place where the worries of the world, melt away, and the natural wonder of the land takes over. There aren't any tall buildings or skyscrapers or malls, or even chain stores or businesses. It is a land rich in culture and history with the most fantastic places to visit, explore and view. One of the villages in Molokai, is Kualapuu, which has a population of 1936 people, with over half of those being native Hawaiians and the rest a melting pot of ethnic groups. The history of the village is also the history of the island; with the first people coming here to live in 650 AD. The Polynesians brought their own culture and special way of living with the land and sea, enabling them to survive quite well, with their leaders and holy men being known for their power and wisdom. In 1778, the island had been seen by Captain Cook, but it took another 8 years before a European would set foot on the land. Soon, a minister named Reverend Harvey Hitchcock came and started a community in 1832, followed by more foreigners wanting to start plantations on the very fertile island. It became one of the biggest producers of pineapples in the world, and there were also sugar mills and coffee farms that made this island a leader in the raising of agricultural products. One of those immigrant from Europe was a German named Rudolph W. Meyer, coming here in 1848, and surveying the lands. He eventually married Kalama, a high chieftess and settled down in Molokai to raise a family. Meyer started a sugar mill in 1878, using mules and steam engines that would process the sugar cane. Kualapuu went through various evolutions and became a Del Monte pineapple plantation that closed in 1988, then growing coffee beans, which has taken over many of the older plantations that grew pineapples and now grow the more valuable coffee. One of the best attractions in the area is the Molokai Museum and Cultural Center that is located a few miles from Kualapuu, with many marvelous exhibits and renovated artifacts that include Hawaii's oldest sugar mill. For a nominal fee, you can tour the mill and see how sugar is processed, then head over to the coffee plantation where you can stop at their shop and buy some of the finest coffee beans in the world. They also have a tour around the fields, on a wagon, watching how the coffee is grown and processed.

  • Flyin Hawaiian ZiplineFlyin Hawaiian Zipline Hawaii
The newest and longest zipline in Hawaii has opened up for business, offering 8 wonderful ziplines that goes through the forests and landscapes of the state. The best ride is 3600 feet long, over 2/3 of a mile, and the others are considered long also for the ones that are located in the islands. The line is so long, that it starts in one town and ends in another, beginning at the Maui Tropical Plantation in the village of Waikapu and ending in Maalaea, just about a mile from the aquarium. To begin the marvelous adventure, you will take a 4 wheel drive to the starting point, then set up your gear and travel on a trainer line that is just 250 feet long, familiarizing yourself with the technique needed to zip the length of the lines and also enjoy and marvel at the magnificent views. It give anyone who has never rode a zipline that chance to learn and gain some confidence about traveling along a line, high above the forest trees and vegetation. The guides make sure that you are secured in with your harness, and putting your trolley on the line properly. All you really have to do is ride and enjoy. Once you have finished the training line zip, you board a six seat ATV called a ranger and the guide will drive you up to the top of the ridge, about 1500 feet in the air. A trail goes up the hill that is somewhat strenuous, finally reaching the observation tower where you can look out over the West Maui Mountains and enjoy the incredible beauty of the forest and the land. The guide will zip the 2800 feet to the next tower, which you can barely make out, and then it is your turn to take a thrilling ride and see the beautiful sights of the jungle and the mountains. Many ziplines will criss cross valleys giving you a long ride, but this zipline company starts on top of a ridge, and takes you across 11 ridges and 9 valleys giving you the optimum opportunity to see some of the most spectacular sights in the islands. The third line is 1900 feet long, where you will go up to 55 miles an hour, and then the fourth line is 2100 feet. Then the fifth line is 500 feet and you have the chance to zip backwards. The sixth is 800 feet and the seventh is 600 feet, with the final leg being 3600 feet long and the end is almost impossible to see, as you can tell from the photo at the right. It is a fantastic ride and day, one you will never forget, and one that is rarely matched at the moment anywhere in the world.

  • Na Pali Coast State Park
Na Pali Coast State Park is 6,175 acres of magnificent sights, found in the center of a rugged 16 mile area along the northwest part of Kaua'i, the oldest inhabited island in Hawaii. The Na Pali coast starts at Ke'e Beach and goes all the way to the Polihale State Park, with the pali, or cliffs, going up 4000 feet above the Pacific and was made to protect the Kalalau Valley. You won't be able to drive into or along the coast, but you can hike or walk there, arrive by boat, kayak or helicopter; but hiking is the best option since you can see more of the beauty of this park, up close and personal, smelling the aromatic scents of the plants, flowers and natural tundra. The Kalalau Trail is the only land access, going 11 miles and crossing over five main valleys, and many smaller ones, before coming to the Kalalau Beach, which sits at the bottom of the Kalalau Valley. The name comes from "the cliffs", which is exactly what the majority of this park contains, rising almost straight up from the Pacific, with its aqua blue waters and treacherous lava rock shoals. High on the tops of the cliffs, you are able to look out into the ocean and watch whales, dolphins and other marine wildlife swimming in the brilliant aqua colored waters that drive up and onto the coastline. Snorkeling is fantastic here, with so much sea life swimming in the depths that you can spend hours doing it and forget about anything else. Many, who have come here, cannot put into words how beautiful and tranquil the land is and many wouldn't bother trying since they know in their hearts the splendor that they have seen.

  • Kawela BattlefieldKawela Battlefield Hawaii
Kawela means "the heat" and it is a hot spot on the island of Molokai. In 1736, invading people from O'ahu came here and fought against the combined fighters of Molokai and Hawaii, although the O'ahu warriors were much more powerful, but the spiritual might of the Molokai was able to overcome them in 5 days of fighting, killing the O'ahu chief, Kapiiohookai. The numerous archeologists that have come here and studied the land, have found the bones of thousands of men, who fought and died here. Again in 1794, Kamehameha I came here to unite the islands and landed his warriors by Kawela, with his canoes stretching out into the oceans for four miles. He overcame the Molokai warriors and was able to capture the chieftess Keopuolani, whom he later married, as she was one of the highest born chieftesses. Along the coast, the Pukuhiwa Battleground is strewn with old stones that had been slung from slingshots during the battle, and the Puuhonua temple of refuge sits nearby, where the defeated warriors took sanctuary. Also in the region, many savage and atrocious acts were committed and the local people here believe that the spirits of the night marchers haunt the area, as they march to the sea.

  • University of Hawaii Football
Hard to realize it, but Hawaii has been playing football for a century, starting out in 1909 with the College of Hawaii's Fighting Deans playing against McKinley High School. But it wasn't until 1920 that they played their first intercollegiate game that was against Nevada. In 1923, when the team had been the University of Hawaii for over three years, they had just beaten Oregon State, 7-0, when a rainbow appeared over the field and reporters began calling the team the "Rainbows". During WWII, there wasn't any play, but afterwards, UH came back to the field as a member of the NCAA. Being located thousands of miles away from the mainland and the nearest NCAA opponent, the university has had a marvelous and unique history. The College of Hawaii was opened in 1907, and two years later fielded their first team. They were called the "Fighting Deans", and could only play against local high schools, military and club teams. Their first game against McKinley High was a 6-5 win, and they continued playing these teams until 1920, when the school became the University of Hawaii, and they played against the University of Nevada, Reno, and lost 14-0. In 1921, Otto "Proc" Klum, brought in the golden age of UH football, and was called the "Manoa fox"; gaining a 84-51-7 record. He coached the team to a 1922, 25-6 win over Pomona College, and in 1923, the well known win over Oregon State, and the appearing rainbow. Soon, whenever a rainbow appeared over the Manoa mist, the team won. With Klum at the helm, the team was able to have undefeated seasons in 1924 and 1925, beating such auspicious schools as Colorado, Washington State and Colorado State. In 1955, the Rainbows upset the Nebraska team, 6-0 and was one of the highlights of that school's history. Four years later, Hawaii became the 50th state in the United States. In 1966, they finished their first all collegiate schedule and were ranked number 5 in the nation in the second division. In 1973, the Rainbows had their biggest upset in their history by beating Washington, 10-7, with UW being favored by as much as 50 points. In 1974, the team was moved into the first division, and in 1976, they were reclassified to Division 1-A, and they are now 1-AA.
