Things to do in Honolulu

Iolani Palace Iolani Palace Honolulu, Hawaii
Iolani Palace is situated in downtown Honolulu, Hawaii, and it is now the only royal palace in the United States that is used as an official residence by the reigning monarch, listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a National Historic Landmark. There have been two royal monarchs that governed from this palace in former days, and include, Queen Lili'uokalani and King Kalakaua. Once the monarchy was overthrown in 1893, the structure would be used as the capitol building for the provisional government, republic, territory and state of Hawaii until 1969. In 1978, it would be remodeled and then opened as a museum for the public, with many outstanding exhibits and beautiful works. The palace that occupies the site today is actually the second one constructed there, the first having been a wooden one story structure that was called Hanailoia, and built in 1844, with just one third the floor space that the second palace had. The Hanailoia had been built by Mataio Kekuanao'a, who had been the long-time royal governor of the island of O'ahu, for his daughter, Princess Victoria Kamamalu, and then bought by King Kamehameha III from Victoria when he would move the capital from Lahaina to Honolulu in 1845. King Kamehameha V dreamed of a palace that was befitting for a king and commissioned the building of Ali'iolani Hale so that it would become the official palace of the Hawaiian monarchy. It would be constructed across the street from the original palace and named after him, which meant "House of the Heavenly king", although the state would desperately need a government building, because the ones that were located there were much too small and cramped for any type of meetings. The Ali'iolani Hale would eventually become an administrative structure, instead of housing the palace, which housed the judiciary agency of the Kingdom of Hawaii, and some other ministries. When David Kalakaua would become king, the original palace was in dire need of repairs, as well as suffering terribly from ground termites, so he would order the old palace destroyed by fire. Kalakaua would become the first king to travel around the world and as he visited Europe, he would enjoy viewing the grand palaces that had been constructed and owned by other kings and queens. Like Kamehameha V, he would dream about a royal palace that was befitting a king of a modern state like Hawaii, so he commissioned a new Iolani Palace to be constructed across from the old Hale that would become the grand palace of the Hawaiian monarchy. Thomas J. Baker designed it, with Charles J. Wall adding the details and architect Isaac Moore. The cornerstone was laid in 1879 and built of brick, with concrete facing. It would be finished in 1882, and cost more than $340,000, which was quite a sum at that time. It is 140 feet by 100 feet and raises two stories over a raised basement to become 54 feet high. The architecture can't be found anywhere else in the world, and the unique style is called American Florentine with a grand first floor hall that includes a staircase of koa wood, and ornamental plaster to decorate the interior. It would serve as the official residence until 1893.

    Bishop MuseumBishop Museum Honolulu, Hawaii
The Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum has been designated the Hawai'i State Museum of Natural and Cultural History, located in the historic Kaliki district of Honolulu, Hawaii that began in 1889 and is the state' biggest museum today. It houses the world's biggest collection of Polynesian cultural and scientific relics, containing more than 13.5 million specimens of entomological species, which is the third biggest in the nation. Charles Reed Bishop, a local philanthropist and co-founder of the Kamehameha schools and the First Hawaiian Bank, would construct the museum in honor his wife, Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, who had been the last legal heir of the Kamehameha dynasty that had ruled the kingdom from 1810 until 1872. Bishop has originally constructed the museum to house his wife's heirloom collections that had been passed on to him when she passed. It would be built on the original boys campus of the Kamehameha Schools, an institution that had been created to benefit native Hawaiian children that had been outlined in the princess' last will and testament. In 1898, he built the Hawaiian Hall and Polynesian Hall in the popular Richardsonian Romanesque style that are still standing today. They were both listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, and the Hawaiian Hall contains the entire sperm whale skeleton with paper mache body that is suspended above the center gallery, with prized koa wood exhibit cases lining the walls that are today worth more than the original Bishop Museum buildings. It also houses the Hawaiian Royal Regalia that includes the royal crown and consort's crown. The Jhamandas Watumull Planetarium is located on the grounds as well, which is an educational and research facility that is dedicated to astronomical sciences. There is a life-size copy of the moai or huge stone that was discovered in the Polynesian island of Rapa Nui, when visitors enter the campus, as is Pauahi Hall, that is home to the J. Linsley Gressit Center for Research in Entomology and contains 14 million prepared specimens of insects and related arthropods and includes more than 16,500 primary types, making it the third biggest in the nation and the eighth in the world.

    Shangri LaShangri La Honolulu, Hawaii
Although Shangri La pertains to a fictional place in the 1933 novel Lost Horizon by James Hilton, there is a real Shangri La in Hawaii, just outside of Honolulu by Diamond Head that is the name of an Islamic type of mansion that was constructed by heiress Doris Duke, and is owned by the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art (DDFIA) in cooperation with the Honolulu Academy of Arts. It would be started in 1937, just after Doris' honeymoon in 1935 that would take her to the Islamic world. For the next six decades, Doris would commission and collect relics for her house, that culminated in a magnificent collection of 3500 objects. The mansion would be designed by Marion Sims Wyeth, and a artistic reflection of that construction is shown in Kiana Davenport's novel Song of the Exile. Shangri La is filled with magnificent art, built-in architectural elements from Turkey, Spain, Syria, Egypt, Iran, Indian and Morocco, as well as outstanding furnishings. The playhouse is a reduced copy of the 17th century Chehel Setun in Esfahan, Iran and contains a central recreational room and two guest rooms. The beautiful landscaping mixes the formality of an Indian Mughal garden and numerous terraced water features with the intimacy of private Hawaiian fishponds, magnificent vistas of the Pacific Ocean and a tropical garden. Inside the mansion are pierced metalwork and splendid textiles from Spain to India, spectacular ceramics from Iran, gilt and painted ceilings from Morocco and marvelous interiors from Syria. Tours normally last from two and a half hours to three, depending on your tastes, with about an hour and a half on the grounds themselves. You'll view public rooms in the main house parts of the grounds that includes; the living room, entry courtyard, Turkish room, dining room, covered lanai, upper lawn with excellent views of the playhouse, water terraces, mughal garden and mihrab room. It now sits on 4.9 acres on the ocean near Diamond Head, with all the tours starting and ending at the Honolulu Academy of Arts.
