  • Portsmouth Harbor Light HousePortsmouth Harbor Light House
On Piscataqua River in New Hampshire's the only deep water port was in Portsmouth. The city decided they needed a lighthouse and construction began in April and was up and running by July of 1771.The tower was about 50 feet tall and was topped by an iron lantern that produced light by 3 lanterns, and had a copper roof. During 1774 to 1784, the lighthouse was not lit because of the Revolution but was great use for a lookout post in the defense of Portsmouth .Finally in 1784, the tower was relit. In 1791 the lighthouse was transferred to the government and in 1793 President George Washington ordered the light be lit at all times. A fire started in the lighthouse in 1826,and quickly burnt down the structure. Eventually a new cast-iron lighthouse was built in 1878 .The light was electrified in 1934 and automated in 1960 and changed to a green bulb. The lighthouse  still runs strong today.
