Things to do in Corona

Fender Museum of Music & Art Fender Museum of Music & Art Corona, California
The Fender Museum of the Art Foundation began in 1997 and opened the Fender Museum of Music and the Arts, a little preview and education center in Corona, California and started out giving free lessons in drums, guitar and piano to children ages 7 to 17. Their first week they welcomed 209 students that wanted to take advantage of their magnanimous offer and attend an eight week course for free. Today, more than 400 children a week are heading there for low-cost and free lessons, as well as the Kids Rock Free educational opportunities that have grown to include; combo band classes, vocals and bass as well as the original three instruments. The foundation dreams of being able to expand these dimensions to incorporate more multi-cultural musical instruments, theater and dance instruction. In 2002, the museum opened a new venue with 33,000 square feet in Corona, adding more classrooms, a 48 track digital recording studio called Studio FM, visual arts gallery, the outdoor TLC Amphitheater and the outstanding Celebrate the Legacy...the Fender Story exhibit that showcases the half century history of the famous Fender electric guitar and its amazing impact on the world of entertainment. As the condition of the Arts education in this nation continues to decline; with less than a third of the schools in this country even offering an arts education to their children, studies have shown that this kind of curriculum, beginning in the early years of a child's life has an amazing and marvelous impact on that child's development. This fantastic grass roots program has already helped thousands of children across the region, with thousands more on the waiting lists, and is shared with other facilities around the country, continuing to expand it even bigger, as well as starting Kids Rock Free online with internet classes for children around the world. It is an absolutely wonderful idea and certainly is needed in this world where money seems to be the most important and sought after commodity, enticing children to become more involved in the drug trafficking, selling and using worlds, as well as child pornography and other such abominations. Help these good folks out any way you can, since you will be helping the children of today become the adults and leaders of tomorrow, so Rock On!

    Corona Heritage Park & Museum
Corona Heritage Park & Museum Corona, California
Starting out in 1911, the Foothill Lemon Ranch that eventually turned into the Corona Heritage Park and museum; welcomed many migrant workers from Ireland, Mexico, Asia, Africa, Italy and the mid-west. That little settlement grew into a small town with everything being constructed as it was needed, like the housing that grew up out of the tents that were pitched in the way of suburban tracts, the company store, where everything that was necessary to survive could be purchased and everyone had an account and the railroad spur that arrived to take away the agriculture grown. The railroad brought back more supplies, wood and other necessities for the growth of a new town, and the history of this great region was well on its way. The city's fathers realized the need for a historic museum to preserve the many accomplishments that were attained, so in 1991, they looked real hard, but knew, in that economic environment it would be more than difficult to start something. As the economy began to grow, their dreams did too, and by the turn of the 21st century, and the city knew that the time had come to do more than dream. In 2000, the Corona Heritage Foundation became a reality, and within a month, a 10,000 square foot museum was opened in what had been the 1937 company store. The local artists wanted to showcase their talents in the museum and gallery, so studio space was given in return for their educational talents as well. The community began learning about the arts and local events, fairs, meetings, get-togethers and fund-raisers helped to spur it all onward and soon the town had a museum to be proud of and a history to share. The park has become a center for it all, with history and preservation, art and culture and a museum that helps everyone around there and the visitors coming there that the city had a great past and is looking forward to a better future.

This massive and outstanding collection contains commercial tintypes, 1840s calotype negatives, vintage daguerreotypes and Civil War period ambrotypes and many wonderful images from 1840 to the current day. A very important subset of the collection includes the Keystone-Mast collection that holds more than 250,000 stereoscopic negatives and 100,000 paper prints. These original glass and film negatives are a major record of the world's cultural, social, agricultural and industrial history between 1860 and 1950. The library holds 10,000 photography technical books, artists books, salon annuals, photography periodicals, manuscript materials, photography monographs and exhibition catalogs, a copy stand and a growing and impressive computer technology record. The digital collection is the digitized content of the museum's collections and contains more than 13,000 page of content that span 400 themed micro-sites and 9 main discovery aids.

He was also passionate about collecting and during the years has acquired a magnificent collection of more than 75 cars that span the automobile gamut and includes many varieties of muscle cars, Porches, Ferraris and Lamborghinis. March Field Museum
March Field Museum Riverside, CaliforniaThe March Field Air Museum is located by Riverside, California right next door to the March Air Reserve Base and started in 1979 as the March Air Force Base Museum, operated by the Air Force and then transferred to a nonprofit in 1996. The museum houses more than 70 magnificent aircraft and they include; an F-100 super sabre, Lockheed P-38L Lightning replica which is a copy of the first prototype XP-38 that flew out of March Field in 1939, an MiG-23, three F-14 Phantoms, MiG-21, F-14 tomcat, MiG15, F-86 sabre, Boeing B-29 A superfortress Flagship 500 that was on 11 combat missions in WWII, Boeing B-17G Flying fortress, Boeing KC-97L stratofreighter, Northrop YA-9A and many more exciting and gorgeous planes. There are indoor displays that include a missile and bomb cross-section, AT-6 Texan, flight simulator, copies of a German 30mm cannon and jet engines and a film that plays on a regular schedule. In December, 1979, Lt. General James P. Mullins, the 15th Air Force Commander, gave an address dedicating the new Air Force Museum at the March Air Force base in California and was originally housed in the 1930s base theater with many memorable photographs about the base's history from its beginnings in 1918 up to the present with model airplanes and paintings showcased. During its early years, the museum would grow exponentially, so that after one year, the exhibits had doubled and the old theater was full and overflowing. That created a dilemma, so the museum had to be moved and this time it would be housed in the old base commissary with 26,000 square feet of space, as well as room for two or three aircraft. Before 1993, the numerous planes that were acquired would sit on the flightline parking ramp and then during that year, it moved to another location where it still is today and has a bit more room and the many aircraft are parked just outside, but available to be viewed with the other exciting and memorable artifacts that the museum contains.

Mission Inn MuseumMission Inn Museum Riverside, California
The Mission Inn Museum was established to promote the magnificent cultural heritage of the Mission Inn with guided tours, textiles, art, stained glass, architecture, furniture and other cultural resources pertaining to the inn; with numerous permanent displays that highlight the history of the inn and its creators with many changing displays and educational programs. The Mission Inn is now called the Mission Inn Hotel and Spa, located in a historical landmark hotel in downtown Riverside, California, made up of numerous types of architectural styles, although it is believed to be the biggest mission revival style structure in the country. Originally the hotel was a two story, 12 room boarding house named Glenwood Cottage and constructed by civil engineer Christopher Columbus Miller in 1876, and in 1902, his son, Frank changed the name to Mission Inn, constructing various shaped additions until he died in 1935. Frank's dream for the eclectic concoction of buildings was obtained from numerous historical design periods, styles, influences and revivals that included Mediterranean revival style, Moorish revival, Spanish gothic, mission revival, Spanish colonial revival, renaissance revival and Spanish colonial styles of architecture. It is a huge complicated and intricate structure, along the lines of the equally famous Winchester House, with flying buttresses, pedestrian sky bridge, cloister wing with catacombs, narrow passageways, castle towers, medieval type clock, many windows and patios, minarets and five story rotunda among many other eclectic architectural elements. Adding insult to injury, many of the spaces were built for his shorter sister, changing the scale, which added more iniquity to the entire place. During his building period, Frank would travel the world, acquiring more treasures to bring back to the hotel where they are now shown and estimated to be worth more than $5 million. The hotel's St. Francis chapel has four enormous stained-glass windows and two original mosaics by Louis Comfort Tiffany, with a splendid Mexican-baroque styled Rayas Altar that is 25 feet by 16 feet that was carved from a cedar tree and entirely wrapped in gold leaf. In the hotel's Garden of Bells, Frank would collect more than 800 bells that includes the oldest bell in Christendom from 1274. In 1932, Frank opened the St. Francis Atrio that housed the Famous Fliers Wall that had been used to recognize and honor famous aviators, which included WWI ace Eddie Rickenbacker who was the 57th flier to be honored by the hotel and added to the monument. Presently there are more than 151 fliers on the wall, with their signatures etched onto a 10 inch wide copper wings that is attached to the wall. After Frank passed on, his daughter and son-in-law, Allis and DeWitt Hutchings would take over and manage the hotel until their passing in the early 1950s. The inn would then be passed along to various other owners, and a few rooms converted into apartments, until finally, in 1985, was purchased by the Carley Capital Group for $55 million. Because of the outdated structural problems that were found, the company fell behind in its mortgage payments and in 1992, was sold to Duane R. Roberts, a local businessman that loved the old inn, who then finished the restorations and reopened it to the public sometime after. There has been many famous guests at the hotel, as well as presidents, that included; Benjamin Harrison, William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, Herbert Hoover, John F. Kennedy, Gerald Ford, George W. Bush, the Richard Nixons were married there, Nancy and Ronald Reagan honeymooned there as well.

    Planes of Fame
Planes of Fame Chino, CaliforniaThe Planes of Fame aviation museum is located in Chino, California and Valle, Arizona, starting in 1957 by Edward T. Maloney in Claremont, California with just six aircraft. As the museum continued to grow, the museum moved to Ontario in 1965, and then to the Chino Airport in 1973. It owns the biggest Japanese collection of aircraft in the world and this also means that it includes the only flying Japanese Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighter that has the original Sakae engine and Aichi D3A. Numerous aircraft being exhibited at the museum are now the last surviving examples of their kind, like the RF-84K of the FICON project and the Northrop N9MB Flying Wing, with about 30 out of the 150 historical aircraft still flyable, and others being restored at their full-time restoration facility. Some of the most fabulous include a Seversky P-35/2PA/AT-12 Guardsman, Antonov An-2 Colt, Republic P-47G-15CU 42-25234 Spirit of Atlantic City, Chance-Vought Corsair F4U-1a 17799, Horten H.IV Flying Wing Glider and Lockheed T-33 shooting star. There are many monthly and yearly air shows, with the monthly first Saturday shows just mini built around a particular theme; and have included Korean War Aviation, WWI Aviation, Experimental Aircraft, Airplanes in the Movies and more. Every one of these mini-shows starts out with a lecture or seminar by a person or persons involved with the featured aircraft, which is then followed with a demonstration of two or three aircraft that pertain to the special theme. The museum makes sure that all the airworthy planes are flown regularly and has many visiting planes flown by those that come here for the shows, and the annual air show is attended by more planes from around the nation, making it one of the biggest gatherings of warbirds in the nation.  A few of these marvelous flying machines are available to take supporters of the museum on short flights and those that are usually taken include the North American T-6 Texan, the Boeing Stearman biplane and the North American P-51 Mustang; all noteworthy craft that offer these fortunate people a ride like no other aircraft ride in the world.

Riverside Art MuseumRiverside Art Museum Riverside, California
The Riverside Art Museum is found in the historic Mission Inn district of Riverside, California and is located in the former YWCA building that was constructed in 1929 and put on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. The nonprofit was created to showcase visual art of the best quality and supply educational and interpretive programs to the community. During 1929, when the city YWCA chose to commission architect Julia Morgan to design the new structure, Frank Miller, the owner of the Mission Inn and its bizarre building menagerie objected to her design since he wanted one to design the building in the mission revival style of architecture, but she used Mediterranean and classic revival styles to construct the new women's Y; although he ended up using the Mediterranean style himself. In 1960, the Riverside Art Center started their fundraising to buy the recently vacated property, and finally, in 1967, they were able to make a deal for a quarter of a million dollars. By 1982, the structure had been made a Registered Historic Place and city historic landmark, and by 1992, a three part restoration of the building was started with financial help by the city. The structure used both elements of the architecture styles in a new innovative tri-block design, with the first floor containing the swimming pool, a gym and open-air atrium. The second had meeting rooms, a small stage, offices and bedrooms; while a badminton court was placed on the roof. In the latter 1930s, an outdoor fireplace and garden were installed as a memorial to Ruth Muir former secretary, Executive director, who had been murdered in La Jolla while vacationing, at the age of 48. The museum hosts about 20 exhibitions a year, with some traveling that looks at various themes, media techniques and social issues, as well as many educational programs for the community.

Every fee will have one dollar donated to the Riverside-Corona Resource Conservation District that looks after and maintains the beautiful lands alongside the course. The course and land development has a wonderful history and had one of the famous Butterfield Overland Mail Company stage stops on the northern end of the property. Then it was the California Southern Railway that brought the first rail service to the area in 1882, and then 1885, the Santé Fe Railroad took it over. But whichever one it was, the railroads brought the immigrants and emigrants that came here to start a new life and build the country up town by town. These same railroads would bring in wood to build the new homes that were springing up and displacing the old adobe homes that had been here for centuries, with a rich history in agriculture, farming and ranching, with the Temescal Valley where the course is located, mining silica sand to create glass works that were used in many industries. The deep pits would use water and gravity to separate the clay and other materials from the best silica sand granules that would be sent around the nation to the glass makers for tumblers, fine figurines, windshield glass, bottle and jars, and the clay sent to the brick makers to make bricks.
