Veterans Memorial Museum BransonVeterans Memorial Museum Branson, Missouri
Fred Hoppe, a rural Nebraska man, has built the greatest tribute to honor our nation's veterans, according to the Veterans Task Force, who had been inspired by the sacrifices and stories he had heard from his father, Fred Hoppe Sr., and the men that had fought alongside him during some of WWII bloodiest battles; who is honored in the museum with a unique mural and special exhibit that depicts his heroic rescue of a wounded soldier. Fred Jr. would design, fund and construct the Veterans Memorial Museum in Branson, Missouri, collecting and then writing the scripts for more than 2000 rare military relics that he donated for use at the museum; spending four years to raise funds for the memorial to honor the veterans of the 20th century, after having 36 foundations turn him down so that he knew he would have to continue the project on his own. "Experts" told him that it would take at least six years to get the honorable project off the ground, but with more than a thousand men dying in one single day, he knew that he had to work fast. Fred worked 18 hour days, seven days a week, living up to his pledge that he finish in less than a year, opening in 2000. He would then spend hours designing and helping in the construction in his labors, cutting up to 70 tons of logs at a homemade sawmill that he made in his backyard to provide the lumber and siding for the museum's 18,000 square feet of space. He would save money that way, and actually become involved in every aspect in the project, making sure that it would go forward as he planned. Fred would interview and research veterans for more than a quarter century, writing the scripts for every one of the exhibits, getting outstanding help from combat artist, James Dietz, Mike Hagel and others, that would create many combat murals. The centerpiece is a beautiful 70 foot long bronze sculpture that is made up of 50 life sized soldiers running up a beach, with one combat soldier from every state used for the models, with his father, becoming the model for the lead soldier in the world's biggest memorial bronze sculpture. Hoppe, himself is a world renown sculptor, that would create the huge piece while doing the many other chores and duties to get this museum open. It covers WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf and the other conflicts that the United States has been involved in since the beginning of the 20th century.

Ralph Foster Museum Bengal Tiger Exhibit Ralph Foster Museum Hollister, Missouri
Ralph Foster was an avid hunter, fisherman and strong conservationist, collecting Native American and Western relics and firearms for a great many years, and during the 1960s, he would donate a big collection to the School of the Ozarks museum in Point Lookout, Missouri by Branson and Hollister. His continuing financial assistance would add a new wing to the museum in 1969, a new entrance and a new name that would reflect his generous contributions, the Ralph Foster Museum. The museum concentrates on the culture and history of the Ozarks, with displays including the original vehicle used in the television series, the Beverly Hillbillies, dolls, weapons, antiques, glassware, mounted animal displays, natural history, circus toys and miniature model circus, furniture and household items, metal banks and toys, Ozark music personalities and personal hobby collections. The museum would grow from humble beginnings to one of the Midwest's foremost facilities of historical preservation, with the founding started by the president of the School of the Ozarks, Robert M. Good, in the basement of a boy's dormitory. It would continue to grow and after the dorm was eventually vacated, it would be turned into a museum, with a marvelous collection of butterflies and mounted birds, which are still exhibited today. Ralph would become interested in the museum in the 1960s and donate much of his collections, and lead to a name change, another wing and entrance, being enlarged once more in 1977. It was then that Ralph donated his large weapons collection, and by 1991, had grown into a three story structure with 40,000 square feet of space, with another 20,000 square feet for offices, a research library and storage rooms. It is located about two miles south of Branson, in Point Lookout, where the College of the Ozarks in located after changing its name in the 1990s. Each month, they showcase one exhibit, and this month's display is a Bengal tiger, with more than 50,000 living in the regions of India in 1900, but by 1972, that number had dwindled down to 1800, so protection and conservation efforts were put into effect, and today that number has grown to about 4,000.

Branson Scenic RailwayBranson Scenic Railway Branson, Missouri
The Branson Scenic Railway is a heritage railroad situated in Branson, Missouri, operating a tourist train to the glorious Ozark Mountains between Branson north to Galena, Missouri, or between Branson south to the Barren Fork Trestle in Arkansas, or about 40 miles for each of the trips. The railway has many vintage railroad equipment that includes two dome cars, numerous coaches manufactured by the Budd Company and a dining car. The trains get their power from a EMD F9 A unit on the northbound end of the train and an EMD GP30 on the southbound, that way it is possible to take the return trip without having to use or rely on a wye junction or passing siding. The railroad had originally been constructed as the White River Railway between 1902 and 1905, and since the journey was so rugged, a number of tunnels and trestles had to be constructed for a level railroad grade. The railroad would bring tourists to the region, as well as make Branson and the Ozarks, the tourist destinations they are today; and leaves from a historic depot in downtown Branson and uses the tracks that are still used and maintained by the Missouri and Northern Arkansas Railroad. The amount of traffic on this line determines which way the train will then travel. Another option offered by the railway is the dinner train that provides a four course candlelit dinner that used to be one of the highlights in times past, with beef, chicken or fish entree accompanied by appetizer, beverage, salad, veggie and dessert. It leaves the station at 5PM and runs until the first week in November, so be sure and visit before then so you can enjoy a ride on this historic railroad. You have the option of riding in coach seating or dome cars, from the 1940s and 1950s, with the joy of walking through the cars to look at all the displays and relics.

    Marvel CaveMarvel Cave Hollister, Missouri
The Marvel Cave is now a National Natural Landmark just west of Branson, Missouri, sitting on the top of Roark Mountain in Stone County, having been known about since the Osage Indians in the early 16th century, when one of their members would fall through a sinkhole in the huge cavern below. Some evidence has been discovered that indicates that the Spanish would explore the cave in 1541, although the first recorded history would happen in 1869, when Henry T. Blow would lead an expedition into it. An unofficial Stone County chapter of the Bald Knobbers, that had been a group of local vigilantes, had supposedly taken various people to the top of Roark and threw them into the sinkhole. The cave originally had been called Marble Cave, after the explorers on 1882, saw stone on the ceilings that looked like marble, which led to the creation of the Marble Cave Mining Company, which suspended its operations after just four and a half years. William Lynch would purchase it in 1889, and open it to the public. Hugo Herschend would lease it in 1950, for 99 years, making renovations to the cave, and then later, open a theme park called Silver Dollar City, above the cave on the surface. It is famous for being one of the biggest caves in the state, with one of the biggest entry rooms, called the Cathedral Room, of any in the nation, as well as being one of the longest running attractions in the Ozarks. The cavern has an interesting history, with many legends associated with it, but those you can discover when you visit. They offer two different tours, the traditional and the lantern, since the first guided tours had been called traditional, but they would last six hours and led by candle or lantern. Those visiting the cave would have to climb through the sinkhole on a 100 foot ladder down to the top of the pile, then you would slide down the pile to the bottom, and got a candle to light your way. Those tours included the Egyptian room that is now the Shoe room, the lakes passage, passing by huge rock formations called the Great White Throne, that is now the Liberty Bell and the spring room sentinel that is called the sentinel now. Once the Herschends began their tours, they would take away the wooden stairs, and replace them with concrete stairs and paths through the cave, with today's tours lasting an hour or so, and limited to only sixty people. In 2006, the cave owners would offer the lantern tour when the lights would be turned off and lanterns given to each member of the group, which is limited to only twenty people, and cost $10.
