Skokie Heritage Museum Skokie Heritage Museum Skokie, Illinois
Situated inside the marvelous historic engine house that has been splendidly restored on its two floors, the Skokie Heritage Museum also is the home of the Skokie Historical Society that takes care of all the relics and preserves them. The first floor of the museum contains a wonderful reference library that is for the public's use and a permanent fire department exhibit that includes a freshly restored 1860s Rumsley Hand pumper, a rebuilt 1800s ladder truck, 1920s chemical tank, an original 1880s dress hat, many types of nozzles, an 1800s hose cart and much more. On the second floor there is open space where meetings, traveling exhibits, school group programs and private rentals are available and quite often held. The park district staff that takes care of the museum and historic log cabin also provide programs that have recreated the 19th century lifestyles of the city's former citizens, when it was called Niles Center. The society has collected thousands of photographs that showcase the life and times of the people that came to settle and live here, with many available online for your perusal and viewing. Their collection of documents span 1851 to 1968, with maps dating from 1856 through 1940 and photos arranged in major categories. The society has as much information as they could get about the genealogy of the original settlers that have been collected over the years or donated by various family members.

The museum started out as a small storefront located on Main Street in the year 1981, that had been created in response to a Neo-Nazi organization's attempt to march through the city, where many of the survivors now reside. Chicago History Museum Chicago History Museum Chicago, Illinois the Pioneer locomotive
The Chicago Historical Society began in 1856 to study and interpret the city's history, and then renamed in 2006, with most of the early collections acquired by the society would be destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871; which had included a handwritten copy of the Emancipation Proclamation by Abraham Lincoln. It was a terrible loss for the city, its citizens and the museum. After the fire was out and cleared away, the society would begin the process again of gathering materials that would be stored in a building owned by J. Young Scammon, a well known lawyer and member of the society; but once more, as if the hands of fate were not going to allow this vestige of history be grown, no matter what, another fire ripped through the building and destroyed everything in 1874. Forced to construct a fireproof structure, the society would rebuild on the original site, with the replacement opening in 1896, and continued to house the collections until 1932, when it would be used for other purposes until it would be opened as a nightclub in 1985. In 1920, the society bought the huge collection of Charles F. Gunther so that it could revamp its scope and become more of a public museum instead of a research facility. Quite a few relics in the collection pertained to Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War, and included Lincoln's deathbed as well as other pieces of furniture that came from the room where he would die in the Petersen House, and clothing that he and his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln had worn the night of his assassination. The present home of the museum was built in 1932 by the WPA so that the museum could be expanded, since the original Federal style building had been enlarged two times before. In 1972, a new limestone-clad addition would be opened and designed by Alfred Shaw and associates, while the second would be designed by Holabird and Root, which happened in 1988. Some of the interesting and exciting items located there today include the Pioneer, the first locomotive that ran in the city and the first passenger car to run on the city's L system in 1893 that had mahogany and rattan seats and etched glass windows. Their costume and textile collection houses more than 50,000 items and date from the late 19th century to the current day.

Block Museum of ArtBlock Museum of Art Skokie, Illinois
On the campus of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois you can find the Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art that was started in 1980 by Chicago art dealers Mary and Leigh B. Block, who had been the former vice president of Inland Steel. Originally, the museum had been planned on being modeled after the German kunsthalle tradition that meant it would have no permanent collection, but rather rely on the changing exhibitions that would visit here. But as the museum began to grow, with many outstanding pieces being acquired by the university and then transferred to the museum, it began to amass a distinctive permanent collection. The structure that houses it was built in 1980, and designed by Chicago architecture firm, Loebl, Schlossman and Hacki, with the outdoor sculpture garden created in 1989. This museum houses more than 4000 works in its collection today, with an outstanding collection of works on paper. Other significant works in their permanent collection include strong holding from Chicago based artists, along with 19th century photography, drawings and paintings; and the museum still devotes a third of its spaces to changing exhibitions. Their excellent collection of prints include works by Jasper Johns, Max Beckmann, Kiki Smith, Stuart Davis and Lovis Corinth; while the photo collection houses works by W. Eugene Smith and John Collier, Jr, along with many others. The sculpture collection houses works by Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, Joan Milo, Jean Arp and others is sure to delight many visitors. The museum has over 70 sculptural works, weavings and wall hangings by Theo Leffman.

Frances Willard House MuseumFrances Williard House Museum Evanston, Illinois
The home of Frances Willard and her family would become the longtime headquarters of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, that would be made a National Historic Landmark in 1965, after she gave the house to the Temperance Union in 1898 after she passed away. The southern half of the house was constructed in 1865, by Frances' father, in a gothic revival style and in 1878, it would be enlarged. The lovely house would be Frances' home from its beginnings to the end of her life in 1898. Frances Elizabeth Caroline Willard had been a temperance reformer, American educator, writer and women's suffragist; which would help her influence the passage of the Eighteenth and Nineteenth amendments to the US Constitution. The eighteenth amendment would prohibit the sales and use of intoxicating liquors in the nation, unless it was used for religious purposes, passed in 1919 and the nineteenth would prohibit anyone from denying the right to vote based on sex in 1920. She would be the first woman represented in the Statuary Hall of the US Capitol, national president of Alpha Phi in 1887 and the first dean of women at Northwestern University. She would die of influenza at the Empire Hotel in New York city while waiting to take a trip to England and France, leaving her home to the union. The house would become a museum in 1900, with the original furnishings and objects like the furniture, textiles, artworks, family photos, even her bicycle and books galore. Frances would also advocate the rights of women's economic and religion freedoms, labor reforms and education reforms; and a very accomplished speaker.

    Jackson-Thomas HouseJackson-Thomas House Chicago, Illinois
this Italianate style and Second empire architecture house in the Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois was constructed in 1874 by an unknown architect isn't as important as the fact that one Andrew B. Jackson, who was one of the five partners in the firm, would work on the house. In 1879, L. H. Thomas, the manufacturer would acquire it, and in 1910 added a porch and entrance in the classical style. In 1984, it would be made a Chicago landmark.
