Things to do in Youngstown

Butler Art Museum Butler Art Museum Youngstown, Ohio
The Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio that would become the very first museum in the nation to deal exclusively with American art; after being established by local philanthropist and industrialist, Joseph G. Butler, Jr., dedicated in 1919. The original building was a McKim, Mead and White architectural masterpiece that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places today. Before 2007, the most significant artwork in the permanent collection had been Winslow Homer's Snap the Wind, but in that year, the museum would acquire the Norman Rockwell painting, Lincoln the Railsplitter for a whopping $1.6 million sold by Ross Perot, former presidential candidate. Their Native American collection is extensive and had been part of Butler's personal collection. Some other prominent works include the iconic depiction of George Washington's wedding, Albert Bierstadt's Oregon Trail from 1869, and William Gropper's well known Youngstown Strike. Another marvelous painting that is life-sized is by Alfred Leslie and titled, Americans: Youngstown, Ohio that highlights some of the exciting personalities that the Butlers knew from the 1970s. During the last decade, the museum would grow quite a bit, with a 19,000 square foot south wing addition, called the Beecher Center and two years later 3,400 square foot Andrews Pavilion would be added as well. It contains a gift shop, sculpture atrium and cafe, with the museum buying the neighboring First Christian Church complex where they would install a performing arts and education center after converting it.

Ford Nature Education Center Ford Nature Education Center Youngstown, Ohio
This marvelous nature education center is located in Mill Creek Metroparks in Youngstown, Ohio and is houses in a magnificent stone mansion that had been donated to the park in 1968 by the children of Judge John W. Ford, with the nature center opening in 1972 as the headquarters for the park's nature education programs that are offered to all area children and families. The naturalist staff housed there provides an outstanding number of programs during the year that include special events, hikes, workshops and nature school programs. There is a wonderful display area called the Habitat Room that showcases animals and plants from the four local habitats and the Discovery Room where these same children are asked to use their senses to learn more about those worlds; and finally, a Live Animal Room that houses snakes, turtles and other animals that are native to northeast Ohio. The center is home to the Vickers Memorial Library, a gift shop, the Teachers' Resource Center and a fantastic bird observation area. The center is surrounded by beautiful wildlife gardens and hiking or walking trails, where visitors of all ages and sizes can enjoy a good walk along the Virginia J. Axtmann Nature Trail, that is free of barriers and has excellent interpretive signs along the way. These kinds of centers are most important to the youth of our nation and every opportunity for them to learn more about the great outdoors in more significant to them than many people realize. The very idea of a nature park would begin with Friedrich Wilhelm August Froebel, the German philosopher that coined the phrase, kindergarten, knowing that children would have the capabilities and needs quite unique and different from adults, so, in 1840 he would coin the phrase, that actually means "children learning from the garden", since garten is German for garden. And what kind of industry or business is really more important than that of a farmer? If we should ever lose those "gardens" we would be in dire straits, eating meats and animals that have been raised specifically for that reason with all kinds of unusual ingredients to make them fatter and grow quicker.

National McKinley Birthplace MemorialNational McKinley Birthplace Memorial Youngstown, Ohio
This memorial houses the library and museum of President William McKinley, while his birthplace and research center is located nearby, with a historic house museum that has been furnished with period items that had been around during his term in office. The beaux-arts structure was designed by McKim, Mead and White, in 1915, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. One of the most inspiring aspects of the memorial was McKinley's statue, which had been planned to be made of bronze, but it was later changed, when J. Massey Rhind created a masterpiece made from one 35 ton piece of marble, which graces the front of the structure. It is a most fitting monument to the 25th President of the United States that was born in Niles, Ohio in 1843. The structure itself had been planned to be made from granite, but would end up being made from Georgia marble. It sits serenely on a five acre park, with a two story building that included a basement, and a 1000 seat auditorium, which would be constructed with room for only 800. There is a public library that resides in one of the two wings, an assembly hall for meetings of the Grand Army of the Republic and Spanish-American war vets, a room for meetings where town officials would come and a relic room for all the items McKinley received during his presidency. The museum houses bronze busts of the men that would assist him in affairs of the nation, and these included such notables as Theodore Roosevelt, Andrew Carnegie, Henry Clay Frick, Joseph G. Butler, Jr. and Marcus Hanna. Butler would be instrumental in getting the funding necessary for the construction of the memorial and perpetual care. A competition was held to create the best plans, and was finished in 1915, with a beaux-arts design that included many elements of Roman and Greek influence. The library is separated into two parts, with plenty of room for open stacks and meeting rooms, that included a room for McKinley's memorabilia.
