The Inca road system was one of the most comprehensive and advanced transportation system that existed in the pre-Columbian South America, that was based on two north south routes with various branches; with the most notable being the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, with some parts of its being constructed by the cultures that lived here before the Incas, called the Wari culture. The high eastern route would run through the puna grasslands and mountain valleys from Quito, Ecuador to Mendoza, Argentina, while the western route would go along the plains of the coast, except in those areas where the coastal deserts hugged the foothills. There were over twenty routes that traveled across the western mountains, with some going across the eastern cordillera in the mountains and lowlands. A few of these routes would be located some 16,000 feet above the sea, and would link the Inca empire from its northern province in the capital of Quito, Ecuador passing the modern city of Santiago, Chile in the south and altogether linked more than 25,000 miles of roads and would give access to more than 1,200,000 square miles of territory. The road was 1600 to 2600 feet above the sea level, and often span across some 66 feet in width, connecting the adminstrative centers, agricultural and mining centers with the populated areas and the ceremonial places and sacred places. These huge roadways would vary in size, looks and construction methods, but would usually be between 3 to 13 feet in width. They would carry all the commercial, military and people, going from one city to another, with tolls located at the bridges, and quite a bit of it being built earlier by the Wari culture. The Incas would develop unique techniques for those times that would carry them over the heights of the Andes, using huge stones like steps to get to the top areas, and in the desert would construct low walls to keep the sand from spilling over onto the paths. The most significant road was the Camino Real, that ran some 3200 miles, starting out in Quito, Ecuador and passing through the Inca capital of Cusco, end in what today is Tucuman, Argentina. It went across the tops of the Andes, sometimes going as high as 16,000 feet, and use part of the coastal trail that is about 2500 miles as it ran parallel to the sea. Macchu Picchu is located off the route, serving more as a royal estate for the ruling Inca family and many hundred servants. Much of the trails have been lost to time, and some destroyed by the Spanish for one reason or another, and only some 25% is left intact today.

Cusco Cathedral
The Cusco Cathedral also called the Cathedral of Santo Domingo, is the mother church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cusco, situated on the main square of the city, called the Plaza de Armas, constructed in 1654, some century after the building had been started. It would be constructed in the foundations of the remains of the Corichancha, an Inca temple that was torn down by the conquering Spanish colonists, although both sections can be seen in the rear of the church. Next to the cathedral, a smaller church called the Iglesia del Triunfo, which would be the first Christian church to be constructed in the city and another one called the Iglesia de la Compania de Jesus would also be constructed on the plaza. Besides being a holy place of worship, the cathedral has become the main repository of the city's colonial artworks, as well as housing many magnificent archaeological artifacts, and would help the church to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. The Incas would construct a temple called the Kiswarkanchar (Coricancha) on the main square of the city, called the Inca palace of Viracocha, who was the Incan mythology creator. When the Spanish conquistadores arrived and conquered the population, they would tear down the temple and construct their Christian cathedral upon the important site. The structure is shaped like a Latin cross, and had been built on top of the old temple in hopes of taking the Inca religion away from the city, since it had only been a quarter of a century since the Spanish had conquered the Incas and wanted them to leave their old ways. Quite a few of the stones of the church were taken from the Saqsaywaman, which had been a nearby holy Inca and defensive structure that is situated on the hills above the city, and because it is so large, its remains still exist. The cathedral is a gothic renaissance style of building that has incorporated some of the Incas sybolism, like the carved head of a jaguar that is part of the doors. It is a fabulous cathedral filled with magnificent and beautiful artworks and artifacts that bring visitors from all around the world.

The Sacred Valley of the Incas at Pisac is where the ancient civilization of the Incas and the Empire merged, since the Incas believed that the valley itself was sacred because it has a territorial correlation to the Milky Way. After many years, Ayar Manco and his wife, Mama Ocllo would come to a place where Cusco would later be constructed, and this man would become the ancestor of the Inca dynasty, changing his name to Manco Capac, and it would be his descendants that would construct the huge and expansive empire that would be conquered by the conquistadors. Modern Pisac is a very picturesque village, quite typical of the Andean villages located in the region, except for the large spreading pisonary tree that sits in the middle of the square, and the village is well known for its Sunday markets that bring visitors and residents from miles around. Archaeologists have discovered that the village was a religious site, an observatory, citadel, and residence, that might have been used as a refuge in days gone by. This fabulous complex has a temple to the sun and an astronomical observtory, where the priests would discern the growing season each year, with narrow trails that wind through the rocks and caves that take you around the area. Sacsayhuaman or Moray
Sacsayhuaman is also known as Saksaq, Sacsahuaman or Saxahuaman, and it is a walled complex of ruins that sit on the northern side of Cusco, Peru, as the former capital of the Inca Empire, with huge polished dry stone walls that had been cut exactly right so that the use of mortar wasn't necessary. It sits on a hill overlooking the southeastern part of the valley, with outstanding views, and many shards of pottery were discovered on the property that date back a thousand years at least. With the complex situated on top of a hill, and the huge terraced walls, it is believed that this would also be used as a fortress. There is much theory and conjecture about the elements found here, with some written materials that discuss this in length, describing the use of the plaza as a large ceremonial space, with many large rooms that had been used to store goods and military equipment. The huge square and the three large terrace walls next to it is the best known area of the complex, with great craftsmanship shown in the creation and placement of the marvelouss stones that showcased the abilities of these great artisans, that is unlike anything remotely like it in the continent. Many of these stones are so close that it would be impossible to slip a piece of paper between them, with such a masterful precision that allowed the structure to survive the numerous centuries that it has stood. These enormouss blocks of stone weigh anywhere from 128 tons to 200 tons, which further goes to highlight the masterful skill that these ancient beings exhibited. After the siege of Cusco, the Spanish would use many of their blocks to construct the city of Cusco, which is how and why the buildings in the complex would be destroyed. There isn't a structure in the old city that doesn't have any of these stones used in its construction; that had been used for religious structures, government buildings and homes for the wealthiest Spaniards. However, the largest and heaviest stones still sit in their original location, since they would be the hardest to move. In 2008, archaeologists would discover more ruins on the outskirts of the complex, that these learned men considered had been built by the Killke culture, that were ceremonial in nature, although what purpose is not known as of yet. The Killke would be here during the period before the Incas arrived which is thought to be somewhere between 900 AD to 1200 AD. It is a huge and magnificent complex, very exciting and interesting for anyone that enjoys history, culture and construction methods.

This magnificent church is a favorite place of worship, and is now a great repository of the city's colonial art, along with numerous archaeological relics and materials. It would be made a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the city of Cusco listing that was done in 1983. There is a great amount of history associated with this beautiful church, with gothic renaissance styling and some influence of baroque style used in the facade. The Incas that were used to construct this magnificent church would incorporate some of their religious symbols here, like the carved head of a jaguar that is shown on the large cathedral doors. Some of the outstanding artifacts include the altar, or two altars that sit here, like the original lambran or alder tree one that sits in the back, with a neoclassical altar in front of that that is embossed with silver that is still being used. This silver altar had originally been cedar wood covered in gold flakes, although in 1803, Heras Bishop would donate the silver so that it could be beaten and put on the altar. Also located there is the Maria Angola bell that is hung in the right tower, that was cast in 1659 and according to the local tradition, an Angolan slave would throw a piece of gold into the crucible while the bell was being cast. Now the bell is cracked, which is why it is only rung on special occassions, and some say that it can be heard almost twenty miles away. Some of the most beautiful works of art include the Pintura Senor de los Temblores that is the oldest surviving painting in the city, that shows the city as it looked in the 1650 earthquake, the Vicente de Valverde that is a portrait of a friar that would become the bishop at Cusco, after he had accompanied Francisco Pizarro on his conquests; and Christ's 12 parables that is an incomplete collection of 12 paintings by the Quechuan artist Diego Quispe T'ito, which had originally been started as twelve canvasses to show the 12 months of the year and the zodiac symbols of the year, that would include the parables of Jesus into the art.
