Things to do in Grand Island

Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer Grand Island, Nebraska Collections Room
This outstanding museum situated in Grand Island, Nebraska, is dedicated to saving the legacy and heritage of the pioneers that came here and settled the great plains of central Nebraska in the late 19th century, with an excellent living history village called Railroad Town, that was designed to create an 1890s era prairie village, with many of the original period buildings moved here from their original locations. The museum was named after Leo Stuhr, a local politician and farmer, whose family had come here and settled with the original settlers. Leo would donate land, artifacts and money in hopes of starting the museum, and its nucleus. The museum building contains the majority of the exhibits, inside the Stuhr building, that had been designed by architect, Edward Durell Stone and constructed by Geer-Melkus Construction Co. Inc. One of the most famous and interesting, for those of us that have lived a while, the village has the building that Henry Fonda had been born in in 1905, with numerous movies being filmed on location here, and include Sarah, Plain and Tall and My Antonia. The museum did have a working steam engine that would travel the museum's grounds, but that is no longer here. Some of the other historic structures located here include; an earth lodge, rural farmstead, farm machinery, Reynolds Center, Stuhr building, Railroad display, Fonner rotunda, a log cabin, the Taylor Ranch, and more. The museum has many outstanding classes that will thrill and entertain you in a most fascinating way and includes; hats classes, family adult classes, field trips and summer school. The museum's collections department has many great and interesting artifacts that include textiles, art, furniture, animal husbandry, guns and weapons, agricultural implements and tools, Native American objects, historical structures and household accessories. The museum goes to the fair each year to offer some rewarding memories and outstanding classes that aren't often seen nor enjoyed. These include learning period games like skittles, graces, hoops and sticks, blacksmith games and more. The Prairie Blacksmith Association will have their forges ready and waiting to create functional and artistic pieces of metal work, with special activities happening the Stuhr tent everyday, like wood and cast iron cooking, 1890s tinsmithing, a military history display, rope making and historic education, kitchen gadget game, woodworking, glass etching, and so much more that it would take days to divulge it all; so the best thing to do is go there for the fair, that is beginning any day now and runs through September.

Grand Island's Railroad HistoryGrand Island's Railroad History Grand Island, Nebraska
The city of Grand Island, in the state of Nebraska, has been a major railroad center since the Union Pacific Railroad came here in July, 1866, when it was constructing the western part of the original transcontinental railroad, since it was some 150 miles from the starting point of the UP at Council Bluffs, Iowa, and would be the main engine and crew changing spot on the railroad's line. The railroad would construct a depot and locomotive maintenance shops here that would be enlarged over time as the city continued to grow, getting more prosperous as the commerce and transportation offered by the railroad would bring more people and businesses here. Its business trade territory would become bigger as the UP expanded and created other UP main and branch lines during the 1879 to 1891 period, linking the city to other cities and local rural markets. By 1884, it had become a crossroads for the railroads when the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad reached it as it was putting a line from Lincoln to Billings, Montana. In 1885, the Union Pacific locomotive shop in the city would be converted to freight car construction and maintenance, that would continue here for many years. The roundhouse located here would offer excellent jobs for the local workers that would do the repairs and maintenance on the steam engines that would be used to pull the many passenger and freight trains that passed through the city. By the 1920s, when the railroad reached it peak, there were forty stalls located here, where engines could be serviced. These two railroads would change the face of the city dramatically, until the end of the second World War, when automobiles began taking over the services of the passenger train and put a huge impact on the railroads. Eventually, the roundhouse would be closed and then burned to the ground in 1958, after the freight car construction had stopped two years before. The last Burlington train left in 1969, and the last Up passenger train left the city in 1971. The city has become a focal point for railroad enthusiasts from around the country and world, becoming a home for organized railroad history and model railroad clubs.

William Stolley HomesteadWilliam Stolley Homestead and Park Grand Island, Nebraska
Stolley came from Germany, in Holstein, and he was just 26 years old when he came here from Davenport, Iowa in 1857, helping organize a group of immigrants that wanted to settle in Grand Island, Nebraska, the name that he would choose for the new settlement, arriving on July 4th. Their first winter would be the most difficult, and Stolley would be sent to Omaha for supplies. He was the first person to have a homesteader claim in the county, and became quite involved in the new town. On his property, he would construct the first District school and Fort Independence, that had been a fortified underground stable constructed into a hill. He would eventually plant many trees on his property, which would make his property eligible to become a state park in 1927. This state park would become Stolley Park, where today, families can come here to enjoy the beauty of nature, and the children could play at Kids' Kingdom all day long. Stolley worked hard to make sure that his homestead would become a park for future generations, which it has.  William Stolley would also become the director of the school district and keep that position for many years, while also helping to organize the state grange and promoting tree planting. The park includes the house, a one and a half story log dwelling built in 1858-1859, the frame school house constructed in 1869-1870, and a reconstructed log house; as well as Fort Independence, that would help the citizens during the Indian war of 1864.
