RMS Titanic's Wreck RMS Titanic's Wreck St. John's, Newfoundland
The RMS Titanic, is perhaps, the most famous ship in the world, since it was the biggest passenger steamship in the world, that stuck an iceberg on her first voyage traveling from Southampton, England to New York City, and sink on April 15, 1912, that would leave 1517 dead, in one of the most tragic peacetime maritime disasters in history. The Olympic class Titanic had been owned by the White Star Line & built at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Ireland, and set sail on April 10, 1912, with 2,223 passengers on her, hitting the iceberg only four days after leaving port. The unusually high death amounts would be attributed to the lack of sufficient lifeboats, even though she had complied with the regulations of the period, the ship would only carry enough lifeboats for 1,178 people, with more men dying because of the noble "women and children first" protocol that was enforced by the crew. The Titanic had been designed by excellent and experienced engineers, that would use some of the most modern techniques of the day, as well as outstanding safety features, this sinking of a ship on her maiden voyage, with such a terribly loss of life, and the eventual media frenzy that would occur because of the many famous people on board, the legends that have survived because of the sinking, along with the innumerable changes made to the maritime law because of the horrible accident, and the eventual discovery of its wreck, and the huge success of the movie, the Titanic continues to creature great interest. Titanic was built with the finest luxury and elegant features of the day, with a big barber shop, lending library and telephone system, as well as first class swimming pool, squash court, electric bath, gym, verandah cafe, Turkish bath and more; while the first class rooms would be adorned in ornate wood paneling, high end furniture and other fascinating decorations. The third class general room had pine paneling and marvelous teak furniture that was extremely sturdy. The Cafe Parisien had the finest culinary delights for the first class passengers, with an excellent sunlit verandah fitted with trellis decorations and had three electric elevators for the first class and one for the third class. The ship would carry just twenty lifeboats, with two able to carry just forty passengers each, thirteen that would accommodate sixty-five people each and four that could carry up to 47 passengers. Her amazing and incredible story is available for visitors to the museum, with many fascinating relics and other items from the wreckage, along with many unbelievable stories about the fatal incident.

Johnson Geo CenterJohnson Geo Center St. John's, Newfoundland
This geological interpretation center is situated on Signal Hill, in St. John's, Newfoundland, with the majority of the center sitting underground, inside a glacial formation that had been excavated enough to show the exposed bedrock of the hill. The museum would be named after philanthropist Paul Johnson and would open in 2002. The structure was designed to include the geological features of the hill, with the majority of it being situated underground that showcased the natural rock formations. The unique area had been a peat filled landscape that would be stripped of its overburden and a magnificent glass-encased structure of 2 and a half stories constructed on the excavation site. The center would be constructed through the Johnson Family Foundation, for $12 million and the structure uses a cooling and heating system that uses six geothermal wells that had been drilled some 500 feet into the ground. The center explores the earth's amazing history, as well as revealing the true story behind the sinking of the Titanic, with more information about earthquakes, volcanoes and other natural forces that influence the ground we walk on and a lot more. The center has a 3D theater, information about renting it for various functions, science camps and more. Current expositions include the Ultimate 3D Adventure "Fly Me to the Moon", an adventure with teeth called "Dinosaurs Alive 3D" and the Gee in Genome. Other interesting facts learned here include that the rocks at Labrador are among the oldest rocks on the earth. The center is a geological interpretation center, set on the Signal Hill, as a nonprofit, with outstanding galleries that pertain to the earth, and its provincial geology, space exploration, oil and gas exploration, the Titanic disaster and natural resources. It also has a very educational KIDZone that is specially created for children 7 and under, with a gift shop, travelling exhibits, and cafe.

Signal Hill Signal Hill St. John's, Newfoundland
This huge hill looks out over the city of St. John's Newfoundland, as well as many parts of Labrador, with fortifications being constructed here since the mid 17th century, that would begin with the final battle of the Seven Years War in North America that would be fought here on the hill, in 1762. The French would surrender the fort and city to the British that were led by Lt. Col. William Amherst. Amherst would change the name of the hill from the Lookout to Signal Hill, since many of the signals to their ships would be accomplished from the summit, with the signaling continuing until 1960. In the late 18th century, the fort would be started under construction, to become a citadel for the city, that would become manned again in the 19th century, especially during the Napoleonic Wars and the Civil War. The fort would enjoy another construction period during that period, that would include the Queen's Battery Barracks that is today entirely rejuvenated to the way it looked in the 1860s. Cabot Tower would start its construction in 1897, to commemorate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, as well as the 400th anniversary of Cabot's landing, and officially opened in 1900, that would include a flag mast signal and a Marconi wireless station that would later be moved to the international airport in St. John's. The US would keep a battery of anti-aircraft guns on the hill during WWII, and now, it has been made a Canadian National Historic Site, with a marvelous suggestion to visit the tower in the summer because of the high winds that whipped around it in the winter months.

Cape Spear LighthouseCape Spear Lighthouse St. John's, Newfoundland
The Cape Spear Lighthouse National Historic Site is where the Cape Spear lighthouse is located, constructed here in 1836, the second lighthouse to be built on the island, with the first being built at Fort Amherst, that controlled the entrance to the St. John's Harbor, and created by the first legislative assembly that met for the colony, that would instigate the creation of a lighthouse on the eastern most part of North America. Construction started here in 1834, with a square wooden tower with the center tower housing the light, and in 1878, a foghorn would also be installed. The original light that had been used at Cape Spear, starting in 1815, was located at Inchkeith, on the east coast of Scotland, and it used seven Argand burners and curved reflectors, which would eventually be replaced by a dioptric lens system in 1930, after using oil, then acetylene, and finally, electricity. Since it was so close to the convoy routes used during WWII, a gun battery would be installed to defend the harbor's entrance, with barracks and underground passages leading to bunkers for the troops stationed here during the war. A new concrete structure would be constructed in 1955, with the older one being the oldest surviving lighthouse in Newfoundland, which would become the national historic site. The original lighthouse and keeper's house have been rejuvenated to their original condition during 1939, and is open for visitors, with an excellent gift shop attached. The WWII guns and bunkers are still seen at the sight and offer spectacular views of the ocean and surrounding area.

Basilica of St. John the Baptist Basilica of St. John the Baptist St. John's, Newfoundland
This would be one of the biggest building projects in Newfoundland history, with its construction starting in 1839 until its consecration in 1855, and become one of the biggest churches in North America. It sits on the tallest ridge that looks out over the city of St. John's, Newfoundland, in a Latin cross design with a Lombard Romanesque styling of a Roman basilica by the German architect, Ole Joergen Schmidt. The basilica is unique among the North America's 19th century public structures that had been built using limestone and granite imported from Galway and Dublin, Ireland, along with 400,000 bricks from Hamburg, Germany, and local sandstone quarried from St. John's and Kelly's Island on Conception Bay. This is why the church has such a grayish tone, and during its centenary celebration in 1955, Pope Pius XII, would raise its status from a cathedral to a minor basilica. In 1984, it would become a Canadian National Historic Site that recognized its distinctive architectural designs as one of the earliest examples of Romanesque revival style in North America, and its central role as the leading spiritual and cultural home of Newfoundland Roman Catholics. The basilica would be part of the huge boom in church construction that had encompassed the era of Daniel O'Connell and Catholic emancipation in Ireland and Newfoundland. It was the biggest Irish cathedral outside of Ireland, of which there wasn't another structure in the continent that could boast of such close influences from or upon Ireland, and there isn't another structure that has the international reputation that the church has today. The exterior is 260 feet long and 220 feet wide with two towers rising 150 feet from the street, able to accommodate about 2500 people, although during Pope John Paul II's visit in 1984, about 3600 educators would assemble in the church to greet and welcome the pope. The Altar of Sacrifice, located at the front of the sanctuary, contains one of the most revered and valuable works of statuary in the basilica, called the Dead Christ, that had been sculpted in Carrara marble by the famous Irish sculptor, John Hogan, in 1854. It is the sculptor's finest work and is the last of three similar statues that were created by Hogan in the early 19th century, and the only one, that is found outside of Ireland. The church features such outstanding features as Ireland's most prominent expatriate sculptor, John Edward Carew, who had created the bas-relief of The Death of Nelson. There are many other excellent features in the church that include the altar of St. Patrick and the altar of St. Brigid, nine bells in the east tower that includes the biggest bell , the St. John bell, that had been bought by the bishop Mullock in 1850, and a marvelous pipe organ.

Quidi Vidi Battery Quidi Vidi Battery St. John's, Newfoundland
This battery sits on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, part of a large military complex that includes; the Commissariat House, Signal Hill, Fort Townshend and Fort William, as a small coastal gun battery built to stop any American attacks during the War of 1812, but would ironically get an American military base constructed there a century later. The battery would be constructed in 1762, and was constructed initially to protect the bay by the French until the English conquered the city and kept it in service until the 1800s. The battery has many outstanding period dressed interpreters that are available of tours and giving out historical information about the battery, the city and the conflicts that would use it. Visitors can come and smell the aromas of food cooking on the hearths, the way it was done so many years ago for the troops stationed there, along with other excellent interpretive details about the history and heritage of the battery. It is also one of the best sites to watch for whales out in the Atlantic Ocean, as they swim their winter feeding grounds looking for food. It is a reconstructed site that had been situated here for many years during the 18th and 19th centuries, with two cannons and two carronades, along with a powder magazine, encompassed by a wooden palisade, and resting on a magnificent archaeological site that has been excavated in 1965 and 1995. It is just one of the twelve designed by the British to defend the harbor and city of St. John's, from overland attacks, as well as being part of a perimeter defense system and military infrastructure that had been built by the British from 1780. Its importance can be seen by the fact that the battery is the longest living coastal battery in the nation, constantly manned by British forces until the British left Newfoundland in 1870.
