State Capitol in Bismarck Bismarck is the capital of North Dakota. It is also the second largest city in the state. The North Dakota State Capitol Building is a popular tourist destination in downtown Bismarck. The building is a 19 story tower and is located in Bismarck at 600 East Boulevard Avenue. It is situated on a 160-acre site which includes many other government buildings. It is the tallest building in North Dakota and is known as the Skyscraper on the Prairie. The building houses the office of the Governor of North Dakota and the offices of multiple state agencies and departments. The State Capitol is largely surrounded by state government office buildings such as the state's legislative, judicial branches and many government agencies. This Art Deco style skyscraper was designed by North Dakota architects Joseph Bell DeRemer and W. F. Kurke. The south side of the building has a drive-through tunnel which leads to an entrance to the building. There are two parks: the Myron Atkinson Park and the Capitol Park, located on the capitol building campus. Pedestrians can access the Myron Atkinson Park by a tunnel which is under the road. The center of the grounds is known as the Capitol Mall, a large open field of grass with walking paths and American Elm trees. It is also the site of the North Dakota Heritage Center located on the Capitol. Opened in 1967, it is state’s official history museum. The museum features both permanent and temporary exhibits that include historic photographs, fossils of local birds and animals, a rare mummified dinosaur and more.
