Started as a planned city based on the idea of the Sicilian town of Catania, the city of Adelaide is a marvel today because of that great planning by the surveyor-general Col. William Light in 1836. Many of the cities that started the great country of Australia originally were settled by ex-convicts from the British prisons. Adelaide, however, was quite different and is now the capital and most populated city of the state of South Australia. About 12 miles from the coast, this beautiful city is a picture perfect city with wide roads and gorgeous gardens. Sitting by the Torrens River, the city was at first surrounded by a large green park area. Committed to religious, political and civil freedoms, it wasn't long before the city began growing. The city is well known for many reasons, some of which are: food, wine, festivals, sports events, long beaches, culture, defense and manufacturing businesses. It was recently considered one of the top 10 cities to live in in the world.
Although a British territory, the city had many immigrants come here from Europe after it was started. The earliest were the Germans who brought their vine cuttings to help start a thriving wine industry today, with Greeks, Dutch, Italians, Poles and other ethnic groups coming after the second World War. After the Vietnam conflict, many Asians immigrated to the city and now they are coming from the continent of Africa. With such a diversified population, the city is thriving in many areas that have benefited from the melting pot of talents. It has also helped to create a wonderful atmosphere in the cuisine arena and the restaurants of these various nationalities have enriched the city and the people living there.
Home to many wonderful festivals, Adelaide has become quite the center hub for entertainment in Australia, with; Tasting Australia, Adelaide Festival of Ideas, Adelaide Writers' Week, Adelaide Festival of Arts, Fringe Festival, Adelaide Film Festival and Adelaide Cabaret Festival. With such an accolade of festivals and ethnicities, the city can also boast of the Art Gallery of South Australia, home to over 35,000 artifacts; the South Australian Museum, Adelaide Botanic Garden, Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute, a symphony orchestra, a youth orchestra, music groups galore and the list of cultural and entertainment venues will astound you. With 13 named parks and gardens in the city, it is easy to get lost in the beautiful greenscapes and fountains that adorn these gorgeous places. The Adelaide Botanic Garden itself is a 125 acre public garden within a larger garden of three. There is a Victorian glasshouse called the Palm close by the main lake that is home to Malagasy flora. The National Rose Trial Garden is where the roses are tried to see if they will be able to acclimate themselves to the weather and soil down under. The main groupings are Perpetual Roses, Tea Roses, Ramblers, Bourbon Roses and Noisette Roses. Well worth mentioning is the Adelaide Zoo which is the second oldest in the country, with 300 different species and over 1800 animals including; a 70 year old flamingo, Sumatran tigers and orangutans, siamang tigers and bears, oh my, and a sun bear. The list of animals and birds will entice you to go and they do have a children's zoo so your whole family will have a thrilling day. |
