Born on the banks of the Colorado River, the settlement was
called Waterloo, before it became the capital of the new
republic of Texas; and it was named after the father of Texas,
Stephen F. Austin. Located on the eastern side of the American
Southwest, it has become the second fastest growing area in the
country. Today it is a center for business and technology, named
the second best city to live in and the greenest city in
America. With a populace as diverse as the state is large, it is
now home to blue-collar workers, white-collar workers,
professors, students, musicians, politicians and state
employees. Official slogan is "the live music capital of the
world" and unofficial one is "keep Austin weird"; not meaning
the eclectic lifestyle of the people living there, but the home
grown businesses that keep things
The Texas State Capitol building finished in 1888 laid claim to the statement that it was the 7th biggest building in the world at the time. Seems like these good ol boys were starting the biggest stories even then. The city became a favored music place with folks like Willie Nelson and the Armadillo World Headquarters. Quite the place to be in the 70s, but as all things like this, it soon went down the road to rags and closed in 1977, with the final concert being held in 1980. The legends that played at this magical mystery place would awe anyone familiar with rock music. Now, the city has gone down the riches road with companies like Dell and Whole Foods Market. Many dot-coms went belly up during the 90s, but the fact that the city had its share of geeks brought many more tech companies to the area, including; Freescale Semiconductor, IBM, Cisco, Samsung, AMD, Hewlett-Packard, Apple, Google, 3M, Cirrus Logic, Paypal, Sun Microsystems, Intel, Hoover's, Silicon Labs and United Devices. The city seems to be a magnet for futuristic organizations as now the biotech and pharmaceutical companies are also coming into the area and have about 85 companies there now. At one time, the city frowned on anyone wanting to build a skyscraper that would block the view of the capitol building, which became known as the Capitol View Corridor; but during the last decade, many high rises have gone up to make the skyline look much different. The downtown area has slowed its growth due to the current economic trends, but the venues offered haven't changed or slowed down at all. It still is a great place to be at night with all the music blaring, the lights shining, and the people having a fantastic time. Lady Bird Lake is considered to be worth any time you can spend there, with trails going all over and around the beautiful lake. It is the eastern most lake of a chain with 6 other lakes, one being named after one of Texans favorite sons; Lyndon B. Johnson. With museums, restaurants, record stores, boutiques, and many new projects in the works, this city is going to keep on rockin. Lady Bird Lake is an oasis in the midst of a thriving metropolis that gives visitors and residents alike the chance to enjoy the serenity and peacefulness of a beautiful park. All around the lake, the hike and bike trail, which many citizens use for jogging or skating besides the usual venues. Zilker Park is next to the lake, the biggest downtown park itself and the Barton Springs afford a fantastic day of swimming in the heat of the summer days. Lady Bird herself made it a point of beautifying the lake and the areas surrounding it; which is why it was named after her, but only after her death since she didn't want it changed during her lifetime. She was just happy to be doing something great for her community and the people that she learned to love so much. There is the Ann Richards Congress Avenue Bridge that spans the lake and is home to about 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats. March to September, at the dusk, people come to the lake just to watch these creatures take to the air in search of insects and it is an unbelievable sight that must be seen to believe and enjoy. |
